Cyberpunk 2077 has taken top honors at the recent Gamescom 2020 Awards, walking away with wins in five categories. The Gamescom 2020 Awards capped off the weekend-long Gamescom show, which revealed new information and sneak peeks at dozens of different games, starting with a marathon of nearly 40 games during its Opening Night Live kick-off.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated games currently on the horizon, but it’s not entirely clear what state the game is in right now. It’s been subject to several delays, the most recent of which pushed Cyberpunk 2077’s release back from September to November of this year. Developer CD Projekt Red said at the time of the latest delay that the game was content complete, and that it would be using the extra time to balance mechanics and squash bugs. Since then, however, the developer has said that Cyberpunk 2077’s melee combat still isn’t quite where it should be, raising some questions about whether the game is actually up to CD Projekt Red’s standards.

Those concerns aside, Cyberpunk 2077 was impressive enough to take home some major trophies at the Gamescom 2020 Awards. As Gamesindustry.biz reports, the game won five awards, including the show’s top prize, Best of Gamescom. In addition to that big win, Cyberpunk 2077 was also awarded Best PC Game, Best RPG Game, Best PlayStation Game, and the “Most Wanted” Consumer Award, the latter of which is voted on by fans. The official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account shared its gratitude for the win, but said “Gamescom is not the same without being able to meet all of you in person.

Gamescom 2020 marked the first time that the long-running convention wasn’t held in person. Due to a ban on gatherings because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gamescom was an all-digital event this year, dropping new game announcements on stream rather than in a crowded convention hall. Despite the major change of venue, Gamescom 2020 still went off without a hitch, delivering tons of news on upcoming games even with an ever-increasing number of releases being delayed. With some conventions already announcing digital shows next year, it will be interesting to see to what extent conventions begin to move their presence in whole or in part online in the future.

While there’s good reason to have misgivings about Cyberpunk 2077 - both in whether its gameplay will live up to the hype and in how it will handle the sensitive topics it seems set on addressing - there’s also reason to hope. CD Projekt Red has a history of putting out quality games and supporting them long after release, and it could do the same for Cyberpunk 2077. In any case, looking good enough to take home five big awards from one show is a good sign.
