The fall TV season has arrived, and fans of The CW's series of DC superhero shows don't have long to wait for the quartet of premieres. Starting on October 4 with season 3 episodes of The Flash, the Arrowverse now officially includes Supergirl, which formerly resided in an alternate reality on a different network.
The season 2 finale of The Flash included the cliffhanger of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) going back into the past to save his mother's life, and the repercussions of that act will be seen this season. Those changes won't just affect the scarlet speedster's life, either; the effects of that one shift in time will ripple across primetime into the connected CW series. How drastic and lasting those effects will be is one of the biggest hooks of this upcoming TV season.
To help keep building anticipation, the CW has released a sizzle reel for its upcoming shows. It includes characters from long-running series like Supernatural, entering its 12th year, all the way to brand new series like Frequency. The DC heroes are also prominently featured, with dramatic entrances from Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), The Flash, and Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), along with Legends' time cops Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) and White Canary (Caity Lotz).
The promo also gives us glimpses of some new characters, including Kid Flash, who starred in the latest season 3 trailer for The Flash. While fans were expecting Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) to manifest powers at some point in the series, the Flashpoint storyline makes that transformation a given in the very first episode. And although he was killed recently in the Legends universe, we catch a glimpse of Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), who will continue to live on in some capacity in the Arrowverse.
Two new Legends of Tomorrow characters also appear in the video above. The series takes a lengthy trip to the 1940s this season, and features an ancestral Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), grandmother to the Vixen (Megalyn Echikunwoke) we saw in last season's Arrow. The first episode will introduce Citizen Steel, a.k.a. Dr. Nate Heywood (Nick Zano), an historian who seeks out the Legends team with a little help from Oliver Queen.
The sizzle reel does its job well for The CW, heavily featuring the attractiveness of its cast as well as their characters' powers, humor, and brooding mystery. The Arrowverse has a lot in store for viewers plotwise this season, and even these brief glimpses of both favorite and new characters is a powerful reminder of all the twists and turns we're hoping are as entertaining as promised.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
