For the first three seasons of Arrow, whenever Diggle would accompany his vigilante team on a mission to battle criminals on the streets of Star City, he was the only member who lacked some kind of disguise. But at the end of the show’s third season, Oliver suggested that Diggle get a mask. In the premiere of the fourth season, we were introduced to said mask, that was initially criticized as resembling Magneto’s helmet from the X-Men films.
During a crossover episode on The Flash in season 2, Diggle made an appearance on the Scarlett Speedster’s show. During a brief scene between him and Cisco Ramon, Cisco enquired about Diggle’s mask and how he was going to make him a new one. Most thought that we would see his new mask at some point during the remainder of that fourth season of Arrow, but we were left with the same helmet ultimately. However, it has since been confirmed that Diggle would get an upgraded mask in the coming season.
Now The CW has released a sizzle reel, promoting all of the shows returning to the network this season, while introducing some new ones. Among the b-roll, we are treated to the first images of Diggle’s new helmet, which admittedly looks a lot better this time around. It appears that this new version actually protects his entire head, whereas the previous mask did not. This new helmet also contains a red-tinted visor and a chin strap. Aesthetically it is more well-made and gives the impression that Diggle will have an easier time seeing out of it.
At the end of Arrow’s fourth season, Diggle was left morally conflicted over his decision to kill his own brother and his wife’s surprising acceptance of it. His brother, initially thought to be dead during the first few seasons, was ultimately revealed to be alive and an ally of Damien Darhk. In the finale’s closing montage we witnessed Diggle once again re-enlist in the military, leaving Team Arrow.
Given that Diggle is now back in the military, but it is clear he will once again be fighting alongside Oliver and the newly recruited team, it will be interesting to see what brings Diggle back into the story. Does Flashpoint have something to do with this? Whatever it is, it will be great to see Diggle once again back on the team, and wearing a mask that doesn’t make him look like a Marvel villain.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4 at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13.
