The AirPods Pro 2 pack a handful of refinements over the first-generation model, but the product refresh also brings new customization options. Product engraving has been a staple of Apple's online store for decades, but the availability of personalization depends on the materials used. Apple offered free engravings on older stainless steel and aluminum iPod and iPad models, and continues to offer engraving on AirPods. However, the company hasn't been able to offer engravings on newer iPhone models since they feature a glass back.

Apple's AirPods Pro were a substantial upgrade over the standard AirPods, and they blew the competition out of the water. In the three years since the first-generation AirPods Pro were released in 2019, the market for truly-wireless headphones has become much more competitive. The original model is even rivaled by Apple's own earbuds, as the third-generation AirPods and the Beats Fit Pro have longer listening times and a newer chip. The AirPods Pro 2 builds upon the popular first-generation model, with an updated charging case and a new H2 processor.

Aside from under the hood feature additions, there are now new ways to personalize the second-generation AirPods Pro case. The case itself is upgraded from prior models — it effectively serves as its own AirTag and has speakers for easy finding — but it can also be engraved. Engraving a pair of AirPods is not new, and it can be done free of charge at Apple's online store. AirPods Pro can be engraved with letters, numbers, and symbols. It can also be personalized with emoji, or a mix of emoji and text.

AirPods Pro 2 Can Be Engraved With Memoji

Apple iOS 14 Memoji

The amount of text or emoji that can be engraved on an AirPods case depends on its size, but generally, users can engrave between 15-22 characters on the case. Choosing the right text or emoji to engrave is important, because the personalization becomes part of more than just the hardware. AirPods connect to Apple devices quickly, and the name and icon of a pair of AirPods displays when they are connected. For personalized AirPods, the engraving actually appears in the software as well. When a personalized pair of AirPods are connected to an Apple device, the engraving appears on any user interface that shows the AirPods case.

With the introduction of the second-generation AirPods Pro, there is now another way to personalize an AirPods case. Using the Apple Store app on iOS, users can engrave their individual Memoji, custom-posed Memoji, Animoji, and a collection of stickers on a pair of AirPods. This is a more personal touch, since Memoji are custom emoji that are unique to an individual person. This option is only available on the Apple Store app, and is currently limited to three AirPods models – AirPods (2nd generation), AirPods (3rd generation), and AirPods Pro (2nd generation). For buyers looking to purchase the AirPods Pro 2, ordering through Apple offers an opportunity to personalize the case for free.
