The Curse of La Llorona takes place in The Conjuring universe, but does the film have a post-credits scene? The latest addition to Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema's popular supernatural horror franchise, The Curse of La Llorona was marketed as a standalone thriller (one originally titled The Children) for a long time. It wasn't until the movie's premiere at SXSW that it was confirmed as being set in the same continuity as The Conjuring films, including Annabelle and The Nun. All the same, the connection made sense, especially with The Conjuring architects James Wan and Gary Dauberman onboard as producers.
Directed by Michael Chaves (making his feature debut) from a script by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (Five Feet Apart), The Curse of La Llorona takes place in Los Angeles, 1973, and revolves around a social worker (Linda Cardellini) whose children (Roman Christou and Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen) are targeted by the infamous folklore specter La Llorona. The film is one of two Conjuring movies hitting theaters this year, with the other (Annabelle Comes Home) scheduled to arrive at the end of June. After that, the franchise is going to take a break until September 2020, when The Conjuring 3 (as directed by Chaves) releases.
With The Curse of La Llorona opening in theaters this weekend, audiences might be wondering if the movie includes any teasers or late-minutes scares during its end credits. The Curse of La Llorona does NOT feature a post-credits scene... though it does include a small audial tease that hints at La Llorona's return in a future movie. Of course, the credits are still worth sitting through to learn more about who worked on the film (and as a sign of respect to their efforts), but viewers shouldn't expect there to be extra scene along the way.
As for that small tease: if you stick around, you may hear the faint sound of La Llorona weeping just before the credits finish rolling completely. Horror fans might recall that IT did something similar two years ago, when it featured the sound of Pennywise laughing over its end credits. While the latter tease will be paid off when IT: Chapter 2 open in theaters this September, it remains to be seen if The Curse of La Llorona gets a sequel or even a prequel-spinoff set in The Conjuring universe (a la Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation).
For the large part, The Curse of La Llorona functions as a standalone film. In fact, it's hard to tell if the movie was always part of The Conjuring universe, or if it was simply retooled during its development to include an element that places it in the same continuity where demonic creatures like Valak exist. That might explain why WB didn't play up the film's Conjuring connection during its marketing, as well as the movie's lack of a post-credits stinger or a conclusion that feeds directly into the events of another Conjuring movie (like the first two Annabelle spinoffs and The Nun had). Nevertheless, if the movie becomes a success, then there's a good chance we'll see La Llorona against, possibly in a followup that wears its Conjuring heritage on its sleeve.
