Despite being released in 2017, Cuphead has been a game that has managed to stay relevant and in the public mind, with everything being announced from a TV show in development to crossover skins in other games. But the big news fans have been waiting for is whether or not there will ever be a sequel.

Cuphead is a 2D sidescrolling platformer that distinguished itself through its hand-drawn animation art style. That, combined with challenging gameplay, cemented Cuphead as a popular game, and it has since been ported and released on all major gaming platforms. Developer Studio MDHR has continued to capitalize on the success of the game in the wake of its release. In 2019, Studio MDHR announced that they were partnering with Netflix to develop an animated Cuphead TV series. A first look for the Cuphead Netflix show was revealed in June 2020, but no release date has been since announced.

There's also been little news about a potential Cuphead sequel, and fans probably shouldn't expect any announcements for one to arrive anytime in the near future, if the current fate of Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course is any indicator. The DLC expansion for Cuphead was first announced in 2018, but in November of 2020, Studio MDHR announced that Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course had been delayed indefinitely due to production delays caused by COVID-19. Since then, the studio hasn't announced any further updates about the Cuphead DLC. If the studio is having that much difficulty finishing an expansion for the first game, one has to imagine that any potential sequel is still a very long ways off.

Still, when Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course does finally come out, it sounds like it will provide fans a healthy amount of content to play. For starters, the Cuphead DLC will add a third playable character to the game in the form of Mrs. Chalice, who will have her own movesets. Gamers will be able to play the entirety of the base game as Mrs. Chalice, as well as in the new DLC area. In addition, Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course will add both new levels and new bosses to the game.

In the meantime, Studio MDHR is doing what it can to keep Cuphead on everyone's mind, which should reassure fans that the studio is still dedicated to the world it's created. For instance, in season 3 of the popular online game Fall Guys, crossover skins for Cuphead and Mugman were revealed, along with an emote. Players might not have Cuphead 2 anytime soon, but they'll have some adorable skins to use in the meantime.
