The latest trailer for CSI: Vegas reveals that the crime lab team’s past cases are in jeopardy after being called into question. The final episode for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation aired over five years ago, bringing an end to an impressive 15-season run. The original series sparked a pattern of hit crime shows and led to several CSI spinoffs, including CSI: MiamiCSI: NY, and CSI: Cyber.

William Petersen, known for his roles in Young Guns and Fear, initially led the series as Vegas’ top forensic scientist, Gil Grissom. The CSI headed the team until his departure from the show in season 9.  Jorja Fox, who played Grissom’s co-worker and love interest Sara Sidle, had already left the series due to personal reasons, so the show was forced to refocus on a new cast. Although Fox did return as a regular, Petersen only made a few additional cameos before the show’s conclusion. But earlier this year, CBS announced that it was launching CSI: Vegas, a continuation of the series that started it all. While it has been revealed that Petersen and Fox will be reprising their roles in Vegas, the plot details for the spin-off have so far been fairly vague.

Now, the latest CSI: Vegas trailer indicates that everything the duo has achieved is in danger of coming undone. In the new clip, mysterious past mistakes threaten to haunt the CSI team. A voice-over from Fox warns, "Every case, every defendant that was put away with evidence from our lab, has been called into question ... Our life's work is on the line." The trailer's ominous warnings indicate that someone may be trying to undermine the Vegas lab's work. In the opening moments, Grissom is accused of making mistakes in his cases, and is even suspected of intentionally altering evidence. However, Grissom is nonetheless recruited by Maxine Roby, the new head of the crime lab, to assist in clearing the allegations and restoring the lab's reputation. The trailer not only provides more insight into the show's plot, but it also teases the return of another familiar face: Detective Jim Brass. The detective played a large role throughout a majority of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation before being written out in season 14.

It is hard to believe that an expert like Grissom would fall victim to simple mistakes, so it seems more likely that someone has a personal vendetta against the lab in the upcoming season. If so, this plot line could open the door for the return of a notable adversary such as "The Miniature Killer." Nevertheless, the return of CSI fan-favorite characters like Fox and Grissom in the trailer, accompanied by The Who's iconic theme song, are sure to stir up heavy interest among loyal fans who have been watching the show for two decades. One thing is for certain, the mystery will begin to unravel when CSI: Vegas debuts on October 6.
