A new Cruella poster shows off Emma Stone's wild look and announces the release of the official trailer tomorrow. The 101 Dalmatians prequel will feature Stone as the iconic villainess in the years before she became infamous for stealing the spotted furry friends. The crime comedy film is said to be an origin story of sorts that will follow Cruella de Vil during her early years as a fashion designer in London. During that time, Cruella becomes obsessed with dogs' skins and becomes the iconic Disney villain in the process.
Stone will be taking over from Glenn Close, who played Cruella de Vil in the 1996 live-action adaptation of the Disney film and its sequel. Stone will star alongside Emma Thompson as the Baroness, the head of a prestigious fashion house in London. Also set to star are Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong. Craig Gillespie is directing Cruella. His last feature film, I, Tonya, landed several Oscar nominations in 2018.
With Cruella only a few months out from its May release date, a first full look at the film will give fans a tease of what's to come. A new poster was released on the Cruella Twitter account, greeting fans with a wry, "Hello cruel world." The post also announces that a new trailer will hit the internet sometime tomorrow and give the first look at Stone's high fashion character in the flesh. Check out the full poster below:
Rumors swirled late last year that Cruella could hit Disney+ as the state of the moviegoing industry remains in flux. As of now, the film is still sitting on its May 28 release date as Disney decides its next move. It’s likely that Disney is waiting at least a few more weeks to make a decision about the film’s release, but with the trailer hitting the internet tomorrow, it seems the studio is set on the May release date, regardless of whether or not that means a release on Disney+.
With Raya and the Last Dragon premiering in March via the streamer's Premier Access platform, the studio could be waiting to see how that film performs before they make a final decision. Either way, Disney is likely hoping that a trailer will drum up interest. With Stone in the lead, it likely will - Cruella is the first major film from the actress since Zombieland: Double Tap failed to make waves in 2019. Prior to that, Stone starred in The Favourite and that film earned the actress her second acting nomination at the Academy Awards. Stone’s return with Cruella is an exciting one and hopefully the film, and her performance, can garner the attention it deserves.
