The Crown season 5 is slated to begin production in July in the UK. The acclaimed Netflix series follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth, one of the longest-reigning monarchs in history. The series' first and second seasons starred Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth with Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret and Matt Smith as Prince Philip. The cast was regularly nominated for Emmy Awards, with John Lithgow scoring a win for his portrayal as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the first season.

The Crown's third season saw Olivia Colman take on the role of Queen Elizabeth and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret. Tobias Menzies took on the role of Prince Philip. The fourth season, which premiered in November 2020, became the series' most acclaimed season yet, with Gillian Anderson and Emma Corrin joining the cast as Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana. As The Crown moves into the modern day with its fifth season, a new cast is arriving in the UK to begin production.

Variety reports that the crew is beginning to arrive at Elstree Studios north of London in preparation for a summer shoot. The crew is hoping to begin shooting in July after COVID restrictions are lifted. The Crown's production team will still shoot under strict safety protocols to create the safest working environment possible.

Joining The Crown for its fifth season is a formidable slate of British heavyweights. Elizabeth Debicki, recently seen in Tenet, will take on the role of Princess Diana from Corrin while Dominic West will play Prince Charles, her estranged husband. Harry Potter actress Imelda Staunton will take on the role of Queen Elizabeth alongside Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) as Princess Margaret. Game of Thrones' Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip. The rest of The Crown's season five cast remains a mystery and there are still some major roles to fill.

When the show picks up after the conclusion of The Crown season four, Princess Diana and Prince Charles' children will have grown considerably. Princess Anne, who was played by Erin Doherty in season four, will also likely play a prominent role. With production ramping up in July and a sixth season also in the works, it's hard to say when The Crown will premiere. Typically, the Netflix show debuts in the fall, but a July production might leave the door open for an earlier premiere. It all depends on whether or not Netflix wants to sit on the new season for a few extra months or if they want to build on the series' awards momentum and make a play for the 2022 Emmy Awards ceremony.
