Sony’s The Crow Reborn passes two more milestones, putting together a crew and setting a filming location. Aquaman star Jason Momoa will play the title character, an undead avenger brought back by a supernatural crow. Corin Hardy (The Hallow) will direct. Reports say the film will get going in February 2018.
James O’Barr created the original Crow comic, first published in 1989. The story concerns an invincible vigilante who returns to earth to avenge his own murder and that of his fiance. Alex Proyas directed the 1994 film version, starring Brandon Lee as Eric Draven/The Crow. Tragedy struck the production when Lee died during an on-set accident with a gun that was mishandled by the props team. Proyas managed to complete Lee’s role using a stunt-double and CGI. Released under a dark cloud, the stylishly violent film grossed $50 million and has since become a cult movie. The current reboot has been in development since 2008, passing through the hands of several studios along the way.
Omega Underground reports that the long gestating The Crow Reborn has now put together a crew and set a filming location. The movie will shoot in Budapest, Hungary, a popular location in recent years. Major crew hires include cinematographer Martijn van Broekhuizen and production designer Alex Cameron, both of whom worked with Corin Hardy on The Hallow. Raymond Gieringer (Drag Me To Hell) will supervise the special effects.
In a 2015 interview, Corin Hardy said he views The Crow as a dark, outsider character, someone who stands out in contrast to the Marvel heroes we’re used to seeing. The director says he’ll go back to the original graphic novel and focus on design and story ideas not used in previous adaptations. Proyas’ original Crow received a sequel, The Crow: City of Angels, and there was also a TV series in Canada. Direct-to-video sequels came in 2000 with The Crow: Salvation and in 2005 with The Crow: Wicked Prayer. Rob Zombie planned but scrapped another sequel to have been titled The Crow: 2037.
Original Crow director Alex Proyas has voiced loud objections to Hardy’s planned reboot. In a Facebook post, Proyas explained that he believes Brandon Lee created something singular with his version of The Crow. Lee gave his life during shooting, and Proyas believes this sacrifice makes Lee’s performance a special case. He called upon Sony to not go ahead with a remake, so the character will always belong to Brandon Lee.
Sony has yet to set a release date for The Crow Reborn.
