Frank Grillo thinks Crossbones will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point, he just doesn't know where. Prior to becoming an action movie star, Grillo joined the MCU to play Brock Rumlow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The movie setup Rumlow's transformation into Crossbones, but it wasn't until Captain America: Civil War that Grillo got to suit up. Unfortunately for him and Crossbones fans, the film killed him during the Avengers' opening mission.

Despite his apartment death caused by the suicide bomb strapped to his chest, Grillo has returned to play Crossbones in various ways. Avengers: Endgame brought him back during the time travel mission to 2012 and the Battle of New York. It was here that Marvel revealed Rumlow and the STRIKE team took Loki's scepter, explaining how it fell into Hydra's hands for Avengers: Age of Ultron. More recently, Grillo had the opportunity to voice Rumlow again in Marvel's What If...?, the animated Disney+ series. This might not be the last time viewers see Crossbones in the MCU either.

Grillo is currently doing press for his new movie Copshop, and he spoke to CinePOP about the project and what his future might hold. This included discussing the possibility of playing Crossbones again. While Grillo shot down the idea of an origin movie for Rumlow, he did say that he thinks Crossbones will return to the MCU at some point. The actor doesn't say how or where this could occur beyond What If...?, but he still thinks his days of playing Rumlow in the MCU aren't over.

I think Crossbones is a secondary villain in that universe. I think you'll see him pop up now and again. I think tomorrow you'll see Crossbones in the animated What If series. I think my first episode is tomorrow, so that's exciting. Crossbones will live, I just don't know in what area of the Marvel universe yet.

Frank Grillo as Crossbones

It is unclear based on this interview if Grillo is speaking about his MCU future as Crossbones with any direct knowledge about what Marvel Studios could be planning. He might only be hoping that Marvel will call him again to play the character, which has happened repeatedly to him before. Grillo previously revealed that he has five movies left on his contract with Marvel Studios so that won't be an issue. Since fans will just have to wait and see if Crossbones does return to the MCU, that will surely drive speculation about how, when, and where it could happen.

The trickiest part with discussing Crossbones' MCU future is the fact that he died in Captain America: Civil War. Unless Marvel reveals that he didn't die in the explosion somehow, that limits his future appearances to flashbacks or as a character returning through the multiverse. If Crossbones returns through the multiverse, then he could appear just about anywhere Marvel wants, such as Captain America 4. He could also return in Anthony Mackie's solo film through flashbacks, such as one that shows Sam Wilson tracking down Crossbones before Civil War's events. Otherwise, he could appear in something like Moon Knight if the MCU makes Marc Spector a former SHIELD agent/mercenary who worked with Rumlow before.
