Critics' Choice Television Awards 2015: Complete Winners List

Silicon Valley wins at 2015 Critics' Choice Television Awards

The 2014-15 movie awards season concluded with the 2015 Oscars ceremony, but television operates a bit differently. Enter the 2015 Critics' Choice Television Awards, which aired Sunday night, May 31st, and took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. For those unaware, the awards ceremony was established in 2011 and is conducted by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, as a way to honor television performers and programs spanning from cable mini-series to reality TV series.

HBO usually does well at the TV awards shows, and the 2015 Critics' Choice Television Awards event was no exception. Co-creator Mike Judge's acclaimed TV show Silicon Valley - a satirical look at life for programmers and tech engineers in the eponymous part of the San Francisco Bay Area - was crowned Best Comedy Series (and snagged co-lead T.J. Miller an award), while HBO and director Lisa Cholodenko's dramatic mini-series Olive Kitteridge picked up awards for its lead France McDormand and costar Bill Murray's performances.

David Oyelowo also picked up an award for his performance in Nightingale; that movie just aired on HBO over the weekend and features Oyelowo (Selma) in a complex role - a psychologically troubled military vet obsessed with a fellow ex-soldier - that requires him to be the only person who is ever glimpsed in full onscreen. HBO also took home the "Best Movie Made For Television" honor for Bessie, a biopic about the early 20th Century musician Bessie Smith, starring Queen Latifah and directed by Dee Reese (the 2011 Sundance Film Festival breakout drama Pariah).

The Americans wins at 2015 Critics' Choice Television Awards

However, not all the major prizes at the Critics' Choice Television Awards went to HBO. FX won the Best Drama Series award for The Americans and Best Animated Series for Archer - both of which are series that frequently make the cut on "Best Ongoing TV Shows You Aren't Watching" type lists, especially in the case of The Americans. The FX Network's neo-western Justified also snagged its costar Sam Eliott a prize for his work on the show's final season.

Other various items worth noting:

  • Empire scene-stealer Taraji P. Henson won for her scene-stealing turn as the matriarchal Cookie Lyon on Lee Daniels' popular music industry soap opera.
  • AMC's The Walking Dead was dubbed "Most Bingeworthy", which its Breaking Bad prequel/spinoff Better Call Saul took home a couple of acting prizes.
  • Amazon's Golden Globe-winning comedy/drama Transparent continued to rack up accolades, with Jeffrey Tambor once again being recognized for his performance as the transgender woman Maura Pfefferman.
  • Amy Schumer kept her recent winning streak alive, taking home a prize for her work on the comedy series Inside Amy Schumer.
