Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3".

The third chapter of the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths saw Green Arrow taking on the role of another DC Comics' hero. In order to save the multiverse, Oliver Queen would once again become someone else. He would become something else; the divine Spirit of Vengeance known as The Spectre.

When Oliver Queen died a hero's death in "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 1", holding off the forces of the Anti-Monitor in order to allow more people to escape from the doomed Earth-38, it was assumed that would be the end of his story. Yet Oliver's friends were not ready to give up on him, and they searched the multiverse for a Lazarus Pit that could be used to resurrect him. This restored Oliver's body but not his soul, and with John Constantine unable to work his usual mojo he was forced to call in a favor from Lucifer Morningstar to open a portal to Purgatory.

The Flash season 6, episode 9 "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3," saw Constantine, John Diggle, and Mia Smoak travel into Purgatory in search of Oliver Queen's soul. They found him easily enough, but before they could return to the land of the living they were stopped by a man Constantine identified as Jim Corrigan. Corrigan told Oliver that he was being called to a higher purpose, as Corrigan once had been and that "only you can light the spark." Reluctantly, Oliver bid his friends and family farewell, as they vanished from Purgatory.

The Spectre and Stephen Amell as Green Arrow

While it had been previously established that The Spectre and his classic host from the comics, Jim Corrigan, would be part of Crisis, it had not been suggested that a new host would be taking over his vigil. Likewise, while Oliver Queen's death during Crisis had been said to be unavoidable, there was nothing to indicate that Oliver's soul would find a way to continue the fight against evil in the afterlife. There is, however, an odd sense to Oliver Queen taking up the mantle of The Spectre, ignoring that both heroes have a fondness for green hoods.

The Spectre's function is to act as an instrument of God's wrath, being an angel of vengeance who smites those evil-doers who somehow escape punishment for their crimes. Given that Oliver Queen first became a vigilante to punish those law-breakers who threatened his city and vent his own righteous anger upon those who preyed on the weak and defenseless, it would seem that the job is a perfect fit. Yet the past few years have seen Oliver Queen mellow and become a warrior for justice rather than vengeance.

Perhaps the new Spectre of the Arrowverse will become an Angel of Redemption rather than remain a Spirit of Vengeance? The Green Lantern Hal Jordan attempted a similar feat in the comics when he briefly became the host of The Spectre and Oliver Queen certainly knows as much about finding redemption as he does seeking revenge. Either way, with Green Arrow now wielding the power of an angel, there may be nothing that can save the Anti-Monitor from the wrath of Heaven when Crisis on Infinite Earths continues.
