In The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths Arrowverse crossover, Green Arrow dies in the first episode, but The Monitor casts doubt on if he's really dead. The Arrowverse has been setting the stage for Crisis on Infinite Earths ever since introducing The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) in last year's Elseworlds crossover. Then, Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) made a deal with The Monitor to save the lives of The Flash (Grant Gustin) and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), but it meant he'd be indebted to the cosmic being in the future.
Throughout all of Arrow season 8, Oliver has been helping The Monitor prepare for the oncoming Crisis, and has known that he would die in the inevitable battle to save the multiverse. With tonight's episode of Supergirl, the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover officially kicked off as heroes from all across the multiverse joined forces to protect Supergirl's home of Earth-38. While they weren't able to save that particular universe, they were able to evacuate three billion people off-world and get them to Earth-1. However, it came at a deadly cost.
In the final moments of Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 1, Oliver sacrificed himself to save even more people from Earth-38, with The Monitor estimating he saved at least one billion all on his own. Unfortunately, Oliver was gravely injured in the process and at the end of the episode, the Green Arrow dies - though not before saying goodbye to his super-friends and his daughter Mia (Katherine McNamara). After the hero's death, The Monitor proclaims Oliver Queen wasn't supposed to die like this, and this wasn't the ending he foresaw for Green Arrow.
The Monitor saying Oliver's death isn't how he was meant to die indicates either that the timeline is changing - and, according to Pariah (Tom Cavanagh), they're all doomed - or that the Green Arrow isn't dead just yet. Or, at least, this is not his final death. After all, Arrow is no stranger to resurrections. These resurrections were typically done using the Lazarus Pit, but as revealed earlier in Arrow season 8, Thea Queen (Will Holland) destroyed all of the Lazarus Pits on Earth-1. It's possible the Arrowverse heroes could travel to another Earth in the multiverse to find a Lazarus Pit, or resurrect Ollie in another way. After all, the Legends of Tomorrow team does have John Constantine (Matt Ryan) and his mastery of magic to help.
Of course, it's possible Crisis on Infinite Earths doesn't undo Green Arrow's death. Arrow is ending, with season 8 being its last, and Oliver's death has long been known to occur at some point either during Arrow's final season or Crisis on Infinite Earths. The end of Part 1 gave Oliver a hero's death scene, saying goodbye to some of his friends and family. However, if this really is how Green Arrow dies, it's a bit underwhelming for the Arrowverse's flagship character. It's only the start of Crisis on Infinite Earths and Arrow's episode in the crossover hasn't even aired yet. It would make more sense, and be far more fitting, for Green Arrow to die on Arrow season 8, rather than Supergirl.
While Green Arrow is dead for now, he may not stay dead. Fans will have tune in to the rest of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover to see what really happens to Oliver Queen.
