A revival of the crime procedural Criminal Minds is in early development for Paramount+. After a whopping 15 seasons and over 300 episodes, the popular CBS procedural aired its final episode just last year.

Criminal Minds follows a team of FBI criminal profilers in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) as they attempt to thwart some of the most dangerous criminals by understanding the twists and turns of their disturbed minds. Created by Jeff Davis, it premiered in 2005 and has been home to numerous well-known actors such as Shemar Moore, Mandy Patinkin, Thomas Gibson, Aisha Tyler, Paget Brewster, and Matthew Gray Gubler. Of the original seven BAU members, only three actors stayed until the end: Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook, and Kirsten Vangsness. The show has also inspired two Criminal Minds spinoff series: Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior in 2011 and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders in 2017.

Originally reported by Variety, it has come to light that a revival of Criminal Minds is in the works. Returning to be at the helm will be Erica Messer, executive producer and longtime showrunner of the original series. Additionally, like the original, CBS Studios and ABC Signature will produce. Due to the nascent nature of the show, not much else is known—namely, who (if anyone) from the show’s 15-year-long revolving cast will return or if it will even center the same sector of the BAU fans have come to know and love.

The news of this Criminal Minds revival is another in an ever-growing list of anticipated releases from Paramount+, a revamping of CBS All Access intended to further cement the newly joined ViacomCBS brand in the current conversation of entertainment juggernauts. Other notable content to look forward to includes a remake of the musical The King & I, a reboot of Nickelodeon’s popular show iCarly, and other brand new content like The Offer, a limited series surrounding the creation of the cinema classic The Godfather.

Reboots, revivals, and remakes are definitely the trend with announcements of reboots to satiate audiences’ nostalgia appearing constantly. In this case, with 15 years of material under its belt, it will be interesting to see where Criminal Minds can go from where it left off. After over 300 episodes of endangering fan-favorite characters, will it take an entirely different direction or stay the course with the names and faces fans have come to love? Will it even be as successful as the original, or will it suffer the fate of the two less popular spinoffs which were canceled early? Only time will tell as fans prepare to potentially spend more time watching their favorite characters endure one perilous situation after another in order to save lives.
