As its first season prepares to come to an end, Shudder announces it has renewed Creepshow season 2. The horror anthology received the reboot treatment from the genre-dedicated streaming service in September, with showrunner Greg Nicotero and a host of talent delivering bite-sized stories designed to creep, horrify, and humor, as each hour-long episode contained two standalone stories in keeping with the legacy of the 1982 film of the same name, written by Stephen King and directed by George Romero.

Since reboots are currently very much in fashion in the world of television, it was only a matter of time before the property was snapped up and brought back to life. As luck would have it, the  reboot landed at the AMC-owned Shudder, which specializes in all things horror, as its growing library of exclusive films and original content continues to demonstrate. Though exclusive films like Revenge and the upcoming 3 From Hell are more commonplace on the service, the success of Creepshow may well pave the way for more horror-oriented original series on Shudder.

The season 2 renewal was revealed in an official announcement by Shudder, which included praise from Shudder general manager Craig Engler who said “Creepshow has met every expectation we had for Shudder’s first original scripted series and then some.” Meanwhile, Nicotero expressed his fondness for the series and its creators with the following statement:

David Arquette in Creepshow Shudder

“For me, Creepshow has been a true labor of love,” said Nicotero. “To be able to pay tribute to George A. Romero’s visionary project and have the show so embraced by fans everywhere is humbling to this horror kid from Pittsburgh. I couldn’t be more pleased and look forward to continuing the series with more ghoulish delight.”

The series certainly made an impact with the streaming service, as earlier reports show over half of Shudder’s subscribers have streamed at least one episode of Creepshow throughout its run. Part of the show’s success is in no doubt due to the familiarity audiences have with the Creepshow brand, though it’s also a good bet that show’s tonal variance played a big role in finding a new audience on TV. Nicotero and his team delivered wildly different stories that will likely appeal to horror fans of all kinds. From an adaptation of Stephen King’s short story ‘Gray Matter’ to the offbeat humor of Rob Schrab’s ‘Bad Wolf Down,’ the anthology had a little something for everyone. And now it seems it’s poised to serve up more episodes in season 2.
