The article contains spoilers for Creed III. Michael B. Jordan reveals details about Adonis and Damian's fight scene in Creed III, which was initially more avant-garde. Creed III sees Jordan returning to the role of Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed from the Rocky franchise. The sequel's plot sees Adonis thriving until Damien, an old childhood friend and boxer, returns to pose a personal challenge in and out of the ring. Jordan makes his directorial debut with Creed III, which costars Jonathan Majors, Tess Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, and Wood Harris.

While speaking with The New York Times, Jordan opened up about his original vision for Adonis and Damian's fight scene in Creed III. During the editing process, Jordan admits that the void part of the scene didn't initially feature sound. Jordan saw that it was an overly artistic choice, which he ultimately decided to pull back from, allowing the scene to play for broader audiences who wouldn't do as well with the planned use of subtitles. Check out Jordan's comments on Creed III's Adonis and Damian fight below:

"Yeah, there was no sound: It was completely silent and just subtitles. I was like, “All right, that’s my artistic side coming out too strong! I got to remember what kind of movie I’m making, that invisible contract that I signed with the audience.” I watched anime all my life, so I could watch and read subtitles at the same time, but a lot of people can’t do that. So I took that away and made it more primal, more about grunts and efforts and posturing. It became more like impressionistic body art."

Adonis Vs. Damian's Fight Scene Explained

Adonis confronts Damian in Creed 3

Adonis and Damian's fight scene occurs in Creed III's final act, where childhood friends-turned-foes settle their differences to see who deserves the heavyweight championship and resolve underlying personal matters about their past. While most of the Creed III fight scene shows a crowd watching the fight, one sequence shows Adonis and Damian isolated in the void, still fighting in the boxing pit but having an intense brawl as they give major blows to each other. Jordan once compared this dynamic to other anime rivalries like Naruto and Sasuke.

With Jordan taking on the director role for Creed III, he brought his personal touch to the film in a big way. He's previously spoken about bringing something fresh to the fight scenes, saying, "it kind of forced me to be more creative and really find, like, think outside the box of how to make the fights different." Jordan pulled heavily from anime inspirations, attempting to show the Rocky franchise a fight like never before that highlights the boxers' emotionality. Jordan's use of anime is evident in the void sequence between Adonis and Damian, in which he also added his own spin to the silent but deep tension between the two boxers. Jordan previously mentioned how the anime influence was important to showcase Adonis and Damian's mentality.

The Rocky franchise has featured numerous fights, shot in various ways by different directors. Even the Creed franchise has made some distinct choices, like Ryan Coogler's use of an impressive single-shot fight in the first film. With Creed III, Jordan not only wanted to make the movie stand out in the franchise but also intended to make his mark as a director, which he has succeeded in doing with a fight scene unlike any the series has seen before. This meant bringing in the influence of Dragon Ball Z or Hajime no Ippo into Adonis and Damian's crucial fight in Creed III.
