Pop singer Ariana Grande showcases her artfully crafted Halloween costume inspired by Creature from the Black Lagoon. The celebrity icon is one of the most recognisable artists in the music industry, though the 28-year-old first found fame as an actress, playing the beloved Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon series Victorious. A talented vocalist, Grande signed a record deal in 2011 and soon found herself hitting the charts, releasing her debut album Yours Truly in 2013. Since then, the dominant singer has earned multiple accolades, including two Grammys, a Brit Award, and more than 20 Guinness World Records.
Creature From The Black Lagoon, released in 1954, was one of Universal Pictures’ trademark monster films. Directed by The Incredible Shrinking Man director Jack Arnold, the black-and-white horror flick (released in early 3D) introduced audiences to the terrifying Gill-Man, also known as the creature, who lurks in the waters of the Amazon. The monster became a staple figure in the horror genre, standing alongside icons such as Dracula, the Mummy, and Frankenstein’s Monster. Two sequels soon followed: Revenge of The Creature in 1955 and The Creature Walks Among Us in 1956.
In a recent Twitter post, Grande showed off her version of the monster, which she calls “Miss Creature From The Black Lagoon.” Sporting an impressive green-gilled appearance, put together by several credited makeup artists, the singer revels in her part by recreating the film’s original theatrical poster. Meanwhile, the Creature From The Black Lagoon franchise is still awaiting a modern reboot. Director James Gunn pitched a remake after penning the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead, but it was ultimately turned down by Universal. Other failed revivals have come closer to fruition, including the planned Dark Universe, which would have seen all of Universal’s monster films rebooted for an eventual crossover. While that was thrown off-track by 2017’s The Mummy's poor reception, 2020's The Invisible Man resparked interest in new solo-films, so a Creature from the Black Lagoon revisit remains a possibility.
Both fans of Grande’s pop career and classic horror cinema enthusiasts will be pleased by the singer’s Halloween effort. She joins the yearly tradition of impressive celebrity Halloween costumes, such as Lil Nas X’s Voldemort transformation or Megan Thee Stallion’s recent Pinhead outfit. With her history as an actress, audiences may wonder if Grande could one day feature in a horror movie herself, after having previously appeared in 2015’s horror comedy series Scream Queens. While glamorous stars like Grande usually get the part of the final girl, this new post implies the singer may be more excited to play the monster.
