As several people already know, Minecraft is the cuboidal game where players can build what they want in a vast open-world as they fight unique enemies and craft various items. Having been on the market for over 10 years, the Nether Update brings a large array of changes and additions to one of Minecraft’s most infamous realms: the Nether.

The soul torch is one the many item recipes added with this update, and it allows the player to craft an eerie-looking torch that emits a blue color. Being perfect for player-made haunted houses and warlock lairs, the soul torch serves as the regular torch’s cooler cousin.

The Materials and Recipe for a Soul Torch in Minecraft

The materials for the soul torch are as follows:

  • Charcoal/Coal: Coal can be found by mining in Minecraft’s overworld while charcoal can be made by smelting wood in a furnace.
  • Stick: Can be found by either punching tree leaves, desert shrubs, or converting wood into sticks.
  • Soul Sand/Soul Soil: Soul sand can be found naturally in the Nether as a type of dirt block. Soul soil, on the other hand, is specific to the Nether’s soul sand valley biome.

These ingredients need to be organized from top to bottom in the order they presented above. It’s basically like creating a normal torch except now the player needs to add soul sand or soul soil to the bottom. None of the materials are particularly difficult to acquire either, so that’s a plus.

The Functions of a Soul Torch in Minecraft

Minecraft Soul Torch vs. Torch Melting

As expected of the soul torch, it is capable of serving as a light source. But it is noticeably dimmer when compared to a regular torch. So the player has to place several soul torches in a base if they intend to use it as a light source.

But the soul torch does have more practical uses. Namely, it is capable of warding off piglin for 7 blocks, making it ideal for any player who wants to build a base in the nether.

These torches are also notably incapable of melting ice or snow. While this is not useful for anyone who wants to create a water source, it does make the soul torch a viable for anyone who wants to make an ice-based building without melting their construction materials.

They can also be used as components to create soul campfires and soul lanterns.
