Producer of The Craft reboot, Douglas Wick, gives an update and teases themes for the witch-centric film. Blumhouse’s revamp of the 1996 cult classic has been in development for quite some time and was at one point in talks to be adapted into a TV series for FOX. Produced by Jason Blum and Wick, The Craft remake intends to follow the same plot as the original, with a new student at a Catholic prep high school joining forces with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft.

Hailed for garnering a massive cult following, The Craft was directed by Andrew Fleming and starred Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, and Neve Campbell (Scream). Early last year, The Craft's main cast of teen witches was revealed: Cailee Spaeny (Bad Times at the El Royale), Gideon Adlon (The Society), Lovie Simone (Greenleaf), and transgender actress Zoey Luna (Pose). Furthermore, it was announced that The X-files’ David Duchovny and Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible-Fallout) were cast in undisclosed roles. Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces) has written the script and will direct the magic mayhem film. Now, Wick offers a glimpse into the remake of the beloved horror movie.

Per ComicBook, Wick - who served as a producer on the original version of The Craft - is “excited” for the upcoming reboot and is optimistic that The Craft remake will satisfy fans of the original while tapping into new themes for a new generation to digest. Helming the reboot of The Craft, Wick reveals the film will dole out more diversity and stated:

It's always challenging because I did The Craft so many years ago, and I started doing it because I just wanted to make a movie about teen-aged girls coming into their sexuality and as I was reading about it, I was reading that the age-old mythology for talking about female empowerment and fear of it was witchcraft. So then I started going to writers to try and do that.

The Craft original

As it stands, it remains to be seen how much connective tissue will exist between the reboot and the original film. While shooting for the film wrapped by February 2020, no official release date has been set for The Craft reboot. However, Blumhouse could feasibly slate the horror film’s release for the Fall of 2020 or early 2021.

The receiver of mixed reviews after its release over two decades ago, The Craft remains a beloved cult classic. Tackling important themes, such as peer pressure, bullying, racism, and self-esteem, The Craft was considered progressive for its time. In an era of reboots and revivals, a reimagining of an iconic film is always a hit or miss. However, given Wick’s attachment and obvious passion for the reboot, there’s no doubt The Craft remake will have a spellbinding effect on its audience.
