As players explore the more dangerous biomes in the Norse purgatory world of Valheim, they will need to find resources to improve their tools, weapons, and clothing. When a player's Viking character is first deposited into the world, they won't have anything but a simple rag tunic that offers little protection from the elements and enemies. As players pick up new crafting materials, including Leather Scraps, Deer Hide, and various animal pelts and metals, they will have the opportunity to craft better clothing and gear that can keep them warm and help them better withstand the more difficult monster fights and boss battles in the game.

The two best armor sets in the game are the Wolf Armor, which is made from Wolf Pelt and keeps players warm in the freezing temperatures of the Mountains biome, and the Padded Armor set, which is made from primarily Linen thread. The Padded Armor set is the seventh tier of armor available in Valheim. It is the direct upgrade from the Wolf Armor set, and when all 4 pieces are equipped, it provides a player 79 armor. Players will want to craft this set prior to going after the final boss, Yagluth, as they will need all the protection they can get against his devastating fire attacks. Here's how to craft Padded Armor in Valheim.

How to Find Linen Thread in Valheim

A player wears pieces from the Padded Armor set in Valheim

The Padded Armor set consists of four separate pieces, each with its own material requirements. These are:

  • Padded Helmet: 15 Linen Thread, 10 Iron
  • Padded Cuirass: 20 Linen Thread, 10 Iron
  • Padded Greaves: 20 Linen Thread, 10 Iron
  • Linen Cape: 20 Linen Thread, 1 Silver

The Helmet, Cuirass, and Greaves are made in a Forge, while the Cape can be crafted at the Workbench. Players can also upgrade all the items in the set to level 4 to maximize durability and armor score. The Helmet, Cuirass, and Greaves require Iron to upgrade, and the Cape requires more Linen Thread.

A Spinning Wheel crafting station in Valheim

Players wanting this armor will need a lot of Linen Thread, almost 100 individual units with all upgrades. To get it, players need to defeat Moder, the fourth boss in Valheim, and use the Dragon Tears she drops to make an Artisans Table. With this crafting station, players can create a Spinning Wheel. The Spinning Wheel requires 20 Fine Wood, 10 Iron Nails, and 5 Leather Scraps to craft.

At the Spinning Wheel, players will need to spin Flax into Linen Thread. Flax is somewhat rare and can only be found in the Plains biome, particularly in the Fuling Villages. It's a good idea for players to replant some as soon as possible to have a more consistent supply for Linen Thread. However, it will only grow in the Plains, so players will want to avoid trying to plant it elsewhere or will lose it.

Players will also need Linen Thread to craft Black Metal weapons, which are some of the strongest in the game and useful against endgame monsters and the final boss.
