Michelle Monaghan has joined the growing cast of The Craft reboot. Monaghan’s unwavering career totes a list of high-profile projects including, Boston Public, Mission Impossible:- Fallout, Gone Baby Gone, and True Detective (the show that netted her a Golden Globe nomination).
Blumhouse’s revamp of the 1996 cult classic film has been in development for quite some time and was at one point in talks to be adapted into a TV series for FOX. Produced by Jason Blum, The Craft remake will follow the same plot as the original, with a new student at a Catholic prep high school joining forces with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft. Earlier this year, The Craft's main cast of teen witches was revealed: Gideon Adlon (The Society), Cailee Spaeny (Bad Times at the El Royale), Lovie Simone (Greenleaf), and Zoey Luna (Pose). Furthermore, it was announced that Nicholas Galizine (Chambers) and Julian Grey (Downhill) will play supporting characters. Now, it’s confirmed that Monaghan will also round out the cast of The Craft.
Per The Wrap, Monaghan has signed on to The Craft, though her character details remain unknown at this time. The announcement of Monaghan’s talents being added to The Craft arrives on the heels of The X-files' David Duchovny joining the cast, also in an undisclosed role. Toting a broad range of talents, Monaghan recently produced and starred in Hulu’s The Path.
The Craft is in the creative hands of producers Blum, Douglas Wick, and Lucy Fisher. Andrew Fleming, who directed the original movie, will shuttle in his expertise from the original film, and serve as executive producer. Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces) has penned the script and will also direct the remake. Having locking in the main cast, The Craft is expected to head into full production soon and could release as early as 2020.
Monaghan’s career shows no sign of slowing down as she will next be seen in Netflix’s political thriller series Messiah. The actress will also star opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Neil Patrick Harris in biological drama Spinning Gold. Given Monaghan's ability to inhabit her roles and the surroundings of her character, she’s the perfect choice to contribute to the spellbinding atmosphere of The Craft. While it remains to be seen what role she will play, Monaghan’s attachment adds further anticipation to the reboot of The Craft.
