The Craft: Legacy writer and director Zoe Lister-Jones explains how the film sets up a possible The Craft 3. A sequel to the 1996 cult classic horror film The Craft, The Craft: Legacy follows a coven of teenage witches. Like many movies right now, the Blumhouse film skipped theaters to debut on VOD Wednesday. While the film is described as a sequel, it also serves as a soft reboot, featuring new characters with the same plot points as the original film.

Similar to character Sarah Bailey's (Robin Tunney) story in the first film, The Craft: Legacy centers around outcast teenager Lily, played by Cailee Spaeny. New to her high school, she soon befriends Tabby (Lovie Simone), Frankie (Gideon Adlon), and Lourdes (Zoey Luna), a group of misfits who practice witchcraft. Realizing that Lily is one of them, the group invites her into their coven. However, they soon learn that Lily's powers may be stronger than they expected. The whole film very loosely connects to its predecessor before the ending clearly merges the two stories together. Now the sequel's writer and director reveals that the movie is left open for a third installment.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting's The Boo Crew Podcast, Lister-Jones explains how she wrote The Craft: Legacy in hopes of making a third film.

"We don’t know [if we’ll get to make another]. That’s really for the people to decide. I do [have ideas]. And I always had imagined… I sort of wrote this film with a third in mind. But yeah. We’ll see how this one goes." The writer and director went on to say, "I think it would be such a dream for all of us to work together again. It truly was a magical experience. And I think really transformative for all of us. So it would be incredible to reunite and get in there again with all of these incredible women.”

The Craft Legacy Cast Shot

When The Craft hit theaters 24 years ago, it was not exactly a box office success, nor did it impress critics. However, it has gained a cult following in the years since its initial release for its message of female empowerment and embracing one's differences, while tackling issues like bullying and racism. While these same themes are revisited in The Craft: Legacy, reviews for the sequel have so far not been kind, with many saying that it's failed to live up to the original.

With Lister-Jones saying that the possibility of a third film depends on whether audiences will ask for it, it's questionable that a continuation will happen. Based on the reviews, it seems that the sequel is a disappointment compared to the original. However, loyal fans of The Craft may want to see how the story continues, especially with its connection to the first film. Both movies focus on the idea of being an outcast and learning how to embrace one's true self, which resonates with many people. It will be interesting to see if The Craft: Legacy the potential to spawn another film in the series.
