Farrell and Cotillard Join Cronenberg's 'Cosmopolis'

David Cronenberg's upcoming film Cosmopolis didn't need much help to look interesting. Still, the director decided to cast some serious talent in Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard. While Cotillard may find herself in a supporting role, Farrell will get more screen time.

The film, based on a Don DeLillo novel of the same name, focuses on one man's journey through Manhattan to get a haircut. The problem is, he encounters a number of distractions and obstacles along the way.

From public ceremonies to personal assassins, the day is a string of strange events. Even better, the entire story takes place within a limo. It sounds like a loose, modern-day adaptation of Homer's Odyssey the more you think look into it.

Colin Farrell will play Eric Packer, a young billionaire who goes through the string of said events. Marion Cotillard will play his wife, but according to the novel's description, she seems to have a recurring, but supporting role. Most of the tale is entirely focused on Packer and his interactions.

A cool aspect of the story is the limo itself. The billionaire character has modified the stretch with some James Bond-like features. Wikipedia's breakdown of the novel explains it concisely:

"The stretch limo which adorns the cover of the book is richly described as highly technical and very luxurious, filled with television screens and computer monitors, bulletproofed and floored with Carrara marble. It is also cork lined to eliminate (though unsuccessfully, Packer notes) the intrusion of street noise."

The basic nature of Cosmopolis makes for an intriguing concept. It will be interesting to see how Cronenberg takes a chain of events and weaves them together. With $20.5 million he should have plenty to take over the streets of Manhattan if he goes that route. Then again, there is always green screen :-/.

I'm on board with this project, but I'm also anxious to see Cotillard in a leading role. Her beauty and talent go hand in hand, but her roles have limited her to an extent. She has been featured prominently in a number of films since her Academy Award-winning turn in La Vie En Rose, but it's about time Hollywood gives her a femme fatale role (ahem, Bond girl).

This month Cronenberg begins shooting A Dangerous Method in Germany with Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen. You can see Marion Cotillard this summer alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Christopher Nolan's Inception. Colin Farrell's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus just came out on DVD and Blu-ray.
