The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, aptly named for writer-director Edgar Wright's self-referential hangover cure, was officially kicked off in 2004 with the zom-com Shaun of the Dead, followed by his 2007 love letter to action films Hot Fuzz and the coming-of-age alien invasion finale The World's End in 2013. Though fans could argue the filmmaker had long been honing his razor-sharp editing, writing, and whip pans on Spaced, the Cornetto Trilogy solidified Wright's status as a must-see director.

Naturally, fans of his three most well-known movies have wondered what a potential fourth entry could look like. Though fourth movies in Hollywood rarely stand up to their predecessors, Wright and his team of collaborators have the talent to be the exception to the rule.

What Genre Would It Pay Homage To?

Wright's Cornetto Trilogy feels like a love letter to cinema, which is no surprise considering that he is, if nothing else, just a huge fan of movies. Interestingly, his first movie, A Fistful Of Fingers, is a play on spaghetti westerns, and his flicks have had elements of westerns in them (Sergeant Angel riding into town on a horse in Hot Fuzz), so could Wright go down this path for a potential fourth film, ala his good friend Quentin Tarantino?

Another possibility could be a straight-up heist movie or a superhero film, though Wright has already touched on both of these genres in his other projects, and he unfortunately never got to see Ant-Man to fruition.

Would Simon Pegg Co-Write It?

Every collaboration in the Wright and Pegg canon has been co-written by Pegg, including Spaced. One has to believe that in order to do a fourth film, Pegg and Wright would need to develop the story together again.

One potential hurdle is simply availability. Pegg's career, along with Wright's, has grown exponentially since Shaun of the Dead. Having become an integral part of both the Star Trek and Mission Impossible franchises, not to mention creating and appearing in Truth Seekers with his real-life Cornetto pal Nick Frost, Pegg's schedule is understandably busy.

Who Would Be In It?

In addition to Pegg and Frost's memorable characters, one of the many elements that make re-watching the Cornetto Trilogy so fun is spotting the recurring cast in each movie. Actors such as Martin Freeman, Julia Deakin, Paddy Considine, Rafe Spall, and Bill Nighy have all appeared in multiple roles throughout the trilogy.

It will be interesting to see if Wright would consider pulling from his expanded pool of actors from his other films. Though they're not British, which would understandably eliminate them from the running, scene-stealers like Jon Hamm, Mae Whitman, Chris Evans, or Aubrey Plaza would be fun to see take on Pegg and Frost.

Which Veteran Actor Could They Get Next?

In addition to the wonderful recurring actors, Wright has also managed to nab some of the silver screen's most legendary actors over the years. Hot Fuzz in and of itself was an embarrassment of riches, with Nighy, Timothy Dalton, Paul Freeman, Billie Whitelaw, Jim Broadbent, Stuart Wilson, and Edward Woodward amongst it's amazing cast (not to mention Cate Blanchett in an uncredited role).

Pierce Brosnan joined The World's End, giving Wright the amazing distinction to have worked with two James Bonds and two Indiana Jones villains. One could only dream of a scenario where other thespians like Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Laurie, or Helen Mirren teamed up with Wright's signature style.

Would The Story Be About Growing Up?

Beneath its genre-loving exterior, the Cornetto Trilogy also works so well due to its overarching themes of taking responsibility vs. living in perpetual adolescence. In Shaun of the Dead, Shaun is berated by nearly everyone who isn't Ed for his immaturity, whereas Hot Fuzz sees both Nicholas Angel and Danny Butterman learn to appreciate one another's flaws.

The World's End is the trilogy's most introspective installment, delving into addiction, self-destruction, fear of aging, and self-acceptance. It feels appropriate that the film came out last, with both Wright and Pegg being near or past 40, considering the themes are more adult and pertinent to middle-aged fears.

Which Cornetto Flavor Would It Feature?

It's hilarious to think that an ice cream delicacy became the grounding point of three separately connected, wildly entertaining films. The first movie featured a strawberry Cornetto, with red being the appropriate color with the bloody zombie visage. Hot Fuzz featured a blue Classic wrapper, with blue representing the police element, and the third saw a green mint wrapper to represent the "little green men" alien theme.

According to the Cornetto website, there are a couple more options, such as a chocolate and orange flavor and a pink "mermaid" flavor, consisting of raspberry and vanilla. Is a Halloween-themed or 1980's John Hughes-inspired rom-com in the cards (bonus points if they cast Molly Ringwald)?

Would It Sully The Originals?

Mention the words "crystal skull" to any longtime fans of Indiana Jones and the reaction will likely be disdain. Even the most acclaimed filmmakers have the potential to sully their most beloved properties, with a fourth Cornetto installment being no exception.

At various points, Wright and others have cast down rumors of another movie, with Wright even joking he was upset that Cornetto released more flavors to pick from. No doubt, fans of the originals would love to see Wright, Frost, and Pegg together again, but not in "crystal skull" fashion.

Could They Do A Spin-Off?

Spin-offs are fairly common in Hollywood now with the advent of shared universes, and considering the rich and talented cast in Wright's trilogy, he could also explore where life has taken some of his side characters. Shaun of the Dead feels like the one that has the least potential for a spin-off considering most of the side characters died, but the story hints at life after the apocalypse at the end.

The journeys of Gary's friends after the events of The World's End could provide a fascinating post-apocalyptic epic, or Wright could tackle the stories from the zany Sandford Police Department from Hot Fuzz. Additionally, the career trajectories of Olivia Coleman and Rafe Spall have only gone up since 2007, making them ideal candidates to lead their own movie.

Would It Go Bigger?

Sequels tend to go larger, bigger, bolder, and the Cornetto Trilogy is no exception. While the global implications of Shaun of the Dead feel large, the story was fairly intimate and self-contained. Wright upped the ante in Hot Fuzz with huge stunts and over-the-top action, and The World's End featured more locations, more special effects, and deeper storytelling.

When considering to do a third Batman film, Christopher Nolan admitted one concern was he didn't want to keep infinitely expanding the balloon further, and that's a concern Wright would have to acknowledge. In theory, he could also go the opposite direction and craft a smaller tale if there isn't a story to tell on the larger platform.

Hot Fuzz 2?

Every movie rumor should always be taken with a grain of salt, including the comments Pegg has made over the years about a potential for a Hot Fuzz sequel. Pegg surmises it's the only movie of theirs that could potentially warrant a follow-up, with Nicholas and Danny going back to the big city and Danny being the fish out of water this time.

Movie sequels are never a sure thing or even a necessary thing. Wright, Pegg, and Frost have too much respect for themselves, their work, and their fans to put a product out that wouldn't stand up to their expectations. Speculation can be fun and conversation-inducing, but for now, fans can at least prepare for Wright's upcoming Last Night in Soho and enjoy Pegg and Frost's Truth Seekers on Prime Video.
