At the end of the supernatural action game Control, the protagonist Jesse Faden becomes the head of the Federal Bureau of Control, an organization dedicated to investigating supernatural activities; in the newly released The Foundation DLC, Jesse cleans out the haunted depths of the Oldest House and uncovers some of the secrets that haunts this extra-dimensional office building.

In Control's main campaign, Jesse Haden, searching for her missing brother, stumbles across the Federal Bureau of Control, a paranormal government agency located within the Oldest House, a Brutalist office building with impossible, shifting architecture. A parasitic sound-based life-form has invaded Earth, and Jesse's been appointed as the Bureau's new Director.

The Foundation DLC, released on March 26th, picks up shortly after the climax of the main storyline. Jesse has stopped the invasion of the Hiss, but the Bureau still has a few messes that need cleaning up. To keep the Oldest House from collapsing, Jesse must journey down to the House's titular foundation; along the way, she discovers a few interesting tidbits of information that provide context to the surreal mysteries of Control's main story (Spoilers follow):

Control Secret #1: The Nail That Holds the Oldest House in Place

The Oldest House is not a human construction: it's an alien building re-purposed for human ends. During The Foundation DLC, Jesse discovers the Nail, a giant pillar located in the vast caverns beneath the House, anchoring the strange building to the world while also keeping the Astral Plane from leaking into Earth's reality. Could this Nail – and the House by extension – simply be an over-sized Object of Power like the tools Jesse wields?

Control Secret #2: The Origin Story of Director Northmoor

Control Gameplay

In the base game, players learn about Director Northmoor, a former Bureau Director and psychic currently entombed in a giant reactor core. Documents and flashbacks in The Foundation DLC reveal that Northmoor was one of the first Directors to wield the game's signature "Service Weapon," a tool somewhat similar to but entirely unlike a pistol. He was also the first Director to be "chosen" by the mysterious entity known as The Board.

Control Secret #3: The Fate of Helen Marshall

Control-The-Foundation Marshall Shot

In the main campaign of Control, Helen Marshall is the head of Operations, a deadpan veteran who helps the player take back the Bureau from the invading Hiss then vanishes near the climax. Control's The Foundation DLC reveals where she vanished: to the Black Rock Quarry beneath the House, on a mission to blow up the Nail before the Hiss entities can corrupt it. The Board, the mysterious benefactor of the Bureau, takes lethal offense to that, mainly because...

Control Secret #4: The Board Is a Pyramid Scheme

Control The Board Pyramid

The Board, the inverted black pyramid which lurks in the Astral Plane, has always been an ambiguous figure in Control. It claims to be a benefactor to the Bureau, but it's strange words and deeds imply a detachment from humanity, comparable to a kid playing with ants in an ant farm. The Board goes on to display more sinister actions during The Foundation DLC, assassinating Marshall for trying to destroy the Nail and displaying hostility toward Jesse for not following their script.

Control Secret #5: The Board Is Actually Multiple Entities

control-former-bossfight

A side-boss from the main campaign, an alien entity called FORMER, returns in Control's The Foundation DLC, alternating between hindering and helping Jesse. Its name proves to be quite fitting: FORMER is a disgraced ex-member of the Board, which is not a single monolithic being as some assumed, but a group of Astral beings... beings that might also look like giant one-eyed ticks.

The game name Control is very apt, since the theme of 'controlling' or 'being in control' is central to the game. The invading Hiss want to control's people's minds, the Bureau wants to contain supernatural phenomena, and the Board wants to control the Bureau. Judging by the events of The Foundation, any future DLC or sequels for Control will involve Jesse trying to take control of her own life, breaking free from the agendas of these otherworldly beings.
