Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind Control, recorded a record year in 2020, despite having no new releases. When Control was released in 2019, it won Remedy a new wave of fans. The action-adventure title went on to be nominated for Game of the Year at 2019's The Game Awards, as well as several other coveted accolades.

While 2020 was unquestionably a difficult year, it was a stellar 12 months for the gaming industry. As more and more people were staying at home and finding new ways to entertain themselves, gaming became a lifeline for many. The ability to communicate through online play in games such as Fall Guys and Among Us allowed the chance to socialize while still maintaining a physical distance. That is not to say that only games that offered this connection with others benefited. Even games that were not aimed at multiplayer interaction also received a boost in 2020.

This trend was certainly true for Remedy Entertainment. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the Finnish developer saw an operational profit of €13.2 million by December 31st, 2020 – up from €6.5 million from the same time period in 2019. That is over twice as much profit for the company, all in the space of 12 months. These figures are made even more impressive considering that Remedy Entertainment did not actually release a single new game in 2020. Instead, these profits were made from the release of Control on additional platforms such as the Nintendo Switch, as well as updates and an Ultimate Edition of the game.

Control Ultimate Edition

This impressive turnover has not left Remedy Entertainment without its share of controversies, however. When the developers announced that those wishing to receive a free upgrade of Control to the now current generation of gaming consoles, such as the PlayStation 5, would have to be in possession of Control Ultimate Edition, rather than just the base game, fans were understandably displeased.

Regardless of this backlash, Remedy Entertainment looks to be going from strength to strength. Recently Sam Lake, creative director and writer behind the company’s hits Control and Alan Wake, shared a selfie with the latest draft for the next “big game” under the Remedy banner. Little else is known about what this draft means for the Remedy Universe of games, but it has caused great excitement for those who enjoy the mind-bending and otherworldly style that the company is known for. Things certainly seem to be under control for Remedy Entertainment's future.
