Keanu Reeves is enjoying an incredibly successful second leg of his career with the John Wick series, and that success is set to continue, as Constantine 2 has just been confirmed as being in development. The sequel will follow the original by more than 18 years, but it isn't the first legacy sequel that Reeves has reprised an iconic role for.
In the past couple of years, Reeves has starred in both The Matrix Resurrections and Bill & Ted Face the Music, which follow their predecessors by decades. Now, Redditors have debated which Reeves-led sequel should follow. Between an extreme sports thriller, a cyberpunk cult classic, and a follow-up to an overlooked sports drama, fans are waiting.
Speed (1994)
Speed was one of Reeves' biggest action movies to date when it was released in 1994, and it was a huge hit. And while most fans have tried to forget about it, there was a sequel. Speed 2: Cruise Control was the critically slammed drab follow-up set on a cruise ship with Reeves nowhere to be seen. The actor did not return, and it's well documented that Sandra Bullock wished she did the same.
However, RedDurden_00 wants to see "a proper sequel to Speed." As the movie's 30-year anniversary is nearing, there's no better time for a sequel to enter development. Both Bullock and Reeves could return, and since they're both still as popular as they were in the 90s, it could be another unstoppable hit.
Point Break (1991)
Snark_Enterprises wants to see a sequel to the iconic surf thriller Point Break, which sees FBI agent Johnny Utah (Reeves) going undercover as a surfer to uncover a group of thrill-seeking criminals. The Redditor explains, "A sequel to Point Break so we can forget about the crappy remake." The classic action movie was remade in 2015, but it lacked everything that made the original great.
Point Break famously ends with Bodhi surfing into a wave that could only kill him and agent Utah throwing his badge into the sea, seemingly retiring. Though that's a pretty definitive ending, a sequel could at least follow up with Utah's whereabouts since quitting the job and replicate the best things about the buddy cop flick, considering the original Point Break still holds up today.
A Scanner Darkly (2006)
TheRealProtozoid doesn't want to see a proper sequel to Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly, but more of a spiritual sequel. The Redditor suggests, "Maybe not a direct sequel, but another movie like A Scanner Darkly, done in the same style, with Richard Linklater and Reeves re-teaming for another Philip K. Dick adaptation."
The movie is best known for its use of rotoscoping, which is an approach to filmmaking where the footage is drawn over to give it a surreal and hypnotic-like effect. There hasn't been any major movie featuring rotoscoping since, even though it completely drew audiences in, so Linklater and Reeves could work together again on another druggy, rotoscoped cyberpunk flick.
Hardball (2001)
In the 1990s, it seemed like A-list actors had to prove that they were A-listers by playing a coach in a sports movie, as every actor had to have their own. And while it arrived a little later, Keanu Reeves got one, too. Hardball is a sports drama that follows Conor O'Neill (Reeves), who must coach a kids' baseball team to pay off his debts. And Patsx5s thinks a sequel could work well.
If the movie was better known, there would absolutely be an expectation for a sequel, and if it was made by Disney instead of Paramount, there would already be a Disney+ series sequel by now. However, the movie is actually much darker than the usual family sports drama, and as it's based on a true story, a sequel is pretty unlikely.
Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
Reeves clearly chooses which movies to star in based on how much he likes the premise, as the actor has starred in so many cyberpunk-themed films. Along with A Scanner Darkly and The Matrix, the actor played the lead role in Johnny Mnemonic. And Kylon1138 wants to see a Johnny Mnemonic 2.
Though it wasn't the most critically acclaimed movie in the world, it did lean into the cyberpunk aesthetic, and as a result, it has become something of a cult hit and a hidden gem from the 1990s. The 1995 film also had just as much of a cyberpunk premise, as it followed the titular character who can deliver data packages in his head. With the development of digital effects, a Johnny Mnemonic 2 could be a visual spectacle.
Parenthood (1989)
Steve Martin is no stranger to family-friendly comedies that are about huge families. The Cheaper By the Dozen remake series is the best example, but over a decade before that arrived Parenthood. The 1989 movie follows Gil (Martin), who struggles to balance his work life and his home life where he is a father to four children.
Reeves plays Tod, Gil's daughter's boyfriend, who Gil and his wife don't approve of. But when Tod settles down and has a child of his own, all is well. Thedrunner2 thinks Parenthood 2 with Reeves in the lead role could be great. A sequel could be developed naturally, as Reeves could reprise his role as Tod, but be in the same position that Gil was in the first movie, outnumbered by his own offspring and constantly finding himself in fights with them. It'd also be great to see Reeves in the lead role in a family comedy, something that hasn't happened yet.
The Replacements (2000)
The Replacements is a sports drama that follows the Washington Redskins as they go on to win the 22nd Super Bowl without a single regular player on the team. Reeves plays the left-handed quarterback Shane Falco, who nobody believes in but is given a second chance and surprises all of his critics.
Thunderkid1984 is ecstatic about the possibility of a sequel to the 2000 movie. The Redditor exclaims, "Oh yeah!!! I want more Shane Falco." A Replacements 2 almost writes itself, as it could obviously follow Falco 22 years later and now in a coaching role, though it'd probably be strikingly similar to Hardball.
Something's Gotta Give (2003)
LonePirate is hoping that a Something's Gotta Give sequel starring Reeves comes to light. Knowing it's a strange pull, the Redditor comments, "Just for something different, I'd like to see a sequel involving his character from Something's Gotta Give."
Julian was an interesting choice for Reeves in 2003. At this point in time, the actor was one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, and two Matrix films were released in that year alone, so it's a wonder why he chose to play a supporting character in a romantic comedy. That might mean that Reeves found the character interesting more than anything, which gives the idea of a Something's Gotta Give sequel spin-off about the heartbroken doctor some credit.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Bram Stoker's Dracula was the first truly epic movie that Francis Ford Coppola made after 1978's Apocalypse Now. It's one the best gothic monster movies, as the film is a faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker's original novel. Reeves plays Jonathan Harker, who is the Count's solicitor, and Losdearroz wants to see "Dracula 2" with Reeves returning.
The Redditor might be half-joking, given that the film is so faithful to the novel that Dracula dies at the end of the movie. But a sequel could still be developed since stranger things have happened. However, many would probably prefer to see Reeves playing the titular vampire.
The Devil's Advocate (1997)
RyzenRaider wants to see a sequel to The Devil's Advocate, which brilliantly turned the age-old joke of the devil being a lawyer into a feature-length movie. John Milton (Al Pacino) is the devil in human form, and he makes defense attorney Kevin Lomax's (Reeves) life a living hell. And a sequel is actually not completely unlikely, as the movie is left open-ended.
After Kevin thinks he has beaten the devil, Florida reporter Larry transforms into Milton. Milton then says directly into the camera, "Vanity - Definitely my favorite sin." With Al Pacino still delivering Oscar-caliber performances and Reeves being a better actor than he has ever been, The Devil's Advocate 2 could be a legacy sequel that improves upon its predecessor.
