Keanu Reeves says he never stopped lobbying for Constantine 2. Constantine is based on the Hellblazer comic book series, with the first film released in 2005. It was met with a mixed reception, as it changed aspects of the character, like making him American instead of British and altering the reasons behind his damnation. However, the movie found a cult following over the years, with a sequel finally confirmed in 2022. Both Reeves and original director Francis Lawrence will return.

While speaking with Total Film (via MovieWeb), Reeves admitted that he could never let Constantine go, as it was a character he loved. The actor pestered the studio, asking them almost annually if they could make Constantine 2 happen. Check out Reeves' comments on the sequel below:

I don't know if it was unfinished business but it was definitely a role that I loved, and I thought that Francis Lawrence, the director, did such amazing work. I loved playing that character, and I really enjoyed the film. I was like, [adopts Oliver Twist voice] 'Can I please have some more?' ... I kept asking almost every year. I'd be like, 'Can I please?' [and] they'd be like, 'No, no!' So it's exciting. It's almost like an open playground that we can hopefully cook something up and play in, and I guess get out of the playground and prepare a meal, but I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully it can happen. You don't know how these things go. But I'm definitely going to try my darndest to try and realize that dream.

How Will Constantine 2 Fit Into The DCU?

The DCU has seen numerous shakeups over the last year. The surprise shelving of Batgirl remains shocking, as well as the continued controversies surrounding The Flash star Ezra Miller. And while James Gunn and Peter Safran taking the reins of DC Studios is exciting, many of their decisions have been met with backlash, like Henry Cavill being ousted as Superman again and Black Adam dropped as a hero of focus. Still, their continued promise of a new vision for the DCU is intriguing, especially if it winds up including Reeves' Constantine.

Despite much of the DCU's future under wraps, Constantine 2 seems to still be on track, and depending on how the character fits into the universe, he may have a long-standing tenure in front of him. While Constantine was a stand-alone film upon release, the sequel may be part of a larger world of heroes. The character doesn't routinely work with big hitters like Batman or Superman, but he has in the past, proving that Constantine could interact with more prominent DC characters. However, DCU creatives may have an even better solution in mind.

Justice League Dark, which assembles a league of darker heroes like Constantine, Zatanna, Etrigan, and Doctor Fate, was once in the works with Guillermo del Toro. While that iteration never came to fruition, it could thrive under Gunn and Safran, working much like Gunn's own The Suicide Squad. Therefore, Constantine 2 could help bring Reeves' character into the DCU, setting him up to appear in numerous other projects.

On television, Matt Ryan's Constantine jumped from his own canceled series to Legends of Tomorrow, showing how he can thrive with other heroes. So, depending on the DCU plans, Reeves' take could appear in several ways. Still, Constantine 2 has a while before it hits screens, with further updates likely to elucidate the character's future.
