Although The Conners seems to be prioritizing screen time for Harris over her brother Mark, the sitcom could switch this setup around — or give the latter character a more compelling storyline. Harris is still ever-present in the Conner family home, even though she technically moved in with her boyfriend Aldo early in season 4. She’s also technically still supposed to be feuding with her mother Darlene over this decision, although The Conners has not shown the duo disagreeing for some weeks now.

As evidenced, The Conners season 4 is failing to tell Harris’s story effectively, but the show still insists on bringing the supporting star back every week. In contrast, Darlene’s son Mark has had a highly eventful season 4 that has seen The Conners character struggle with a pill addiction, get pulled out of his private school, and end up selling college entrance essays to other students so that he can save up for college. Despite the evident drama and comedic potential of this plot line, though, Mark has barely been seen in recent episodes of The Conners season 4.

Despite Mark living with the Conners and Harris living with her boyfriend Aldo, it is Harris who appears weekly and Mark who is often absent for entire episodes. While The Conners justified Jackie’s constant presence in the family home earlier in season 4, it is bizarre to see how much time Harris spends with the Conners as someone who explosively defended her decision to move out only a few episodes earlier. Mark, in contrast, is younger, more dependent on his family, and in a less stable place judging by his The Conners season 4 story so far, meaning the show should devote more time to his plot line and less to Harris’s story.

The Conners Darlene Mark fight

When The Conners viewers last saw Mark, he was abandoning his college essay scheme to pursue learning the contrabassoon on his mother’s advice, since being able to play an obscure instrument would improve his chances of gaining a college scholarship. Since then, Becky and Darlene moving out have taken attention away from his character arc. However, the fact that a contrabassoon is far too expensive an instrument for the Conner clan to buy or rent may come into play in the upcoming episode “The Best Laid Plans, A Contrabassoon, And A Sinking Feeling,” (season 4, episode 18).

This would be the best path for The Conners season 4 to take, as ignoring Mark to give Harris more screen time has only buried the interesting plot of the former and drawn attention to the nonsensical character motivations of the latter. Harris ostensibly moved out because she wanted space from the Conners and independence, but her perpetual presence in the Conner residence is barely even noted by the family. While Harris moving in with Jackie could fix this plot hole until The Conners commits to clearing up this pointless story, focusing on Mark over Harris is the best plan for the show.
