ABC's The Conners has officially been renewed for season 4. The Conners is a spinoff of the series Roseanne. Development on the follow up series began in 2018 after ABC cancelled the Roseanne revival due to controversial statements made by titular actor Roseanne Barr on Twitter. The Conners stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, and Lecy Goranson and focuses on the family's life and struggles in their town of Lanford, Illinois following the death of matriarch Roseanne. The series has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards.
According to Deadline, ABC has renewed The Conners for season 4, with Goodman, Metcalf, Gilbert, and Goranson all returning. Gilbert also serves as an executive producer on the show. The renewal comes as no surprise as The Conners was ABC's most viewed comedy, with 4.7 million viewers for season 3.
The news of the series' renewal comes directly after ABC's decision regarding its other scripted series. The Goldbergs will return for season 9, Black-ish will be back for an eighth and final season, and new comedy Home Economics has been renewed for season 2. Comedies such as Mixed-ish, American Housewife, and freshman series Call Your Mother have been cancelled.
Amongst ABC's many upbeat, happy-go-lucky scripted comedies, The Conners tackles difficult topics like alcoholism, divorce, financial burden, and death while infusing its plots with resilient humor. Much like its predecessor Roseanne, the series represents an often-brushed-over segment of the American population, allowing them to see themselves in scripted television. By focusing on an average, working-class American family, The Conners has given a voice to the voiceless and is likely to garner new viewership in season 4.
