Although Dan is building a house for his daughters Becky and Darlene on The Conners, it would make more sense for him and Louise to move out for two reasons. A surprising amount of The Conners season 4’s biggest storylines revolves around the titular family’s attempts to move away from home. With three generations of the sitcom’s stars living under the same roof, it is perhaps understandable that the family members yearn for some space away from each other.

No sooner than Harris moved into her boyfriend Aldo’s house to be out from under her mother’s control than The Conners saw her mother Darlene and Becky attempt to find a place together. Becky and Darlene wanted to raise their kids in a larger space and also wanted to give their newly remarried father Dan and his new bride Louise some space. This resulted in Dan offering to demolish a nearby house and build them a home, an answer that is close to perfect but misses out on one better option.

Despite Dan’s advanced age, The Conners character has committed to demolishing the funeral home near the family house so that he can build Becky and Darlene a house, and they can move out of his home. However, that home is the house that Dan (and his late wife Roseanne) raised Becky and Darlene in, and it would make more sense for Dan and Louise to get a fresh start and leave the old family home to his daughters. Not only do Becky and Darlene need a bigger house in practical terms (they have a kid apiece, and Harris may need to move back in), but Dan and Louise deserve somewhere less filled with memories of Dan’s first marriage.

The-Conners-Dan

Dan and Louise never got a chance to establish themselves as a couple outside of the home that Dan and Roseanne shared, and “Let's All Push Our Hands Together For The Stew Train and The Conners Furniture" (season 4 episode 7) showed that this an issue. In that outing, Dan was unable to bring himself to get rid of Roseanne’s furniture, and The Conners made it obvious that he was not over the loss despite being remarried. This means a clean break would be good for the couple, allowing Dan space to focus on his new life without being surrounded by reminders of his loss.

Not only that, but the fact that Becky and Darlene need their own home to house more people makes the decision a logical one, too. All the Conners currently live in the family home, and the space is also often home to Ben, Harris, and (particularly) Roseanne’s sister Jackie, who practically still lives there. It is a massive house for a family that can barely afford it, so Dan and Louie leaving it to the larger family and building themselves a smaller place would make more sense. Making a smaller house for himself and his wife instead of an entire family would also be better for Dan at his advanced age, meaning he would be more likely to make it into The Conners season 5 with his health intact.
