The trailer for The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It gave audiences a glimpse at a new ability for Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga). While Lorraine has always possessed psychic abilities, the trailer reveals that she is able to do something the Conjuring franchise has never seen before— she travels to what seems to be an entirely different plane of existence.

The Conjuring 3 is based on two of the real cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, two of the most famous demonologists in history. The Conjuring 3 tells the story of the Arne Cheyenne Johnson case— the first United States case to use demonic possession as a claim to innocence. After Arne Johnson was charged with murdering his landlord in 1981, Arne claims that he was possessed by a demon during the exorcism of his girlfriend's 11-year-old brother, David Glatzel, which was performed by the Warrens. With Arne's future at stake, the Warrens are called in to prove the existence of demons.

Leading up to The Conjuring 3, Lorraine has displayed some impressive abilities. She's able to speak to the dead (much like the real Lorraine Warren) and frequently received visions from the other side, both of things to come and things that have passed. Each case takes a toll on Lorraine, something her husband, Ed (Patrick Wilson) has become increasingly worried about throughout the Conjuring franchise. But in The Conjuring 3, it seems Lorraine doesn't just receive visions from the other side— she goes to the other side.

the conjuring 3 first look (1)

The Conjuring 3 trailer shows a brief clip of Lorraine leading Ed and an investigator through the woods of Connecticut, a pendulum in hand (pendulums are frequently used by psychic mediums to help detect spiritual energy). After laying her hand on the dirt, everything around her fades away— sunlight, color, and even the two men who are walking with her— until she's left alone in a dark, alternate version of the woods. She's only alone for a moment, however, as it quickly becomes obvious that she's now occupying the spirit world. Throughout the trailer, Lorraine continues to travel back and forth between these two planes, and Ed can be heard pleading for his wife to return.

These new abilities could certainly pose a challenge for Lorraine in The Conjuring 3. Every case through the Conjuring timeline has left Lorraine with emotional scars, and an increase in her power could put her at greater risk— the more Lorraine opens herself to the spiritual world, the more vulnerable she makes herself to attacks from the demonic entities they battle. Ed's plea to his wife raises the question of whether it is possible for Lorraine to become stuck in this alternate reality, and the last few moments of the trailer show Lorraine almost running off of the edge of a cliff while traveling between these two realities. While Lorraine's new abilities might pose a risk, it also opens up a wide range of possibilities for bigger and better scares for The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It and beyond.
