The Conjuring 3 image from IMAX shows the Warrens dealing with a demonically possessed child. The franchise began in 2013 with The Conjuring, which starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in their first appearances as paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. Directed by James Wan, the horror film was met with widespread critical acclaim, enjoyed considerable commercial success, and even spawned a franchise. Annabelle was released a year later and then followed up with two sequels in 2017 and 2019. Spinoffs, The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, are also set in The Conjuring universe.

Wan returned for a sequel to The Conjuring in 2016, which centered on the 1977 Enfield poltergeist case in London, while also briefly touching on the Amityville murders. The third film in the series, subtitled The Devil Made Me Do It, will chronicle the Warrens’ darkest case yet. Though Wan bowed out of the franchise in favor of Michael Chaves, Wilson and Farmiga will both return for the threequel. The Conjuring 3 will find the duo investigating the case of a man who killed his landlord and is claiming demonic possession as a defense (based on the actual trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson in 1981 who was the first suspect ever to use such a defense).

During the Warrens’ investigation, they will also have to contend with another demonic possession, which an image from the film provides a look at. The boy’s name is David Glatzel (Julian Hilliard), who first plays host to the demon that is then passed onto Arne (Ruairi O'Connor). Demonologists Ed and Lorraine look on as the demonically possessed child bends backward. Check out the exclusive image from IMAX below:

While The Conjuring 3 trailer hinted at this being the Warrens’ most sinister case yet, this image gives a better idea of just what they will be dealing with. Lorraine seems to be increasingly affected by each case, and with the possibility of a demonic possession looming, The Devil Made Me Do It may change her, and The Conjuring franchise overall, for good.

Thus far, The Conjuring universe has been tremendously successful, currently sitting at the second highest-grossing horror franchise ever, behind Godzilla. While James Wan not directing the third film may cause some trepidation for fans, he did have a hand in crafting the story and oversaw the project as a producer. After numerous delays, The Conjuring 3 will see a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max on June 4.
