Lorraine Warren actress Vera Farmiga sees The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It as more of a love story than a horror movie. While The Conjuring franchise has become one of the most successful cinematic horror universes thanks to its various spinoffs like The Nun and Annabelle, it's easy to forget the story that started it all. The Conjuring released in 2013, with its sequel coming out three years later. When The Conjuring 3 hits theaters in June it will have been five years since the Warren's took center stage in their own film.

Together, Lorraine and Ed Warren have taken on some of the most prolific supernatural mysteries of all time and much of their strength in the films comes from the love they share. That love will be put to the test in The Conjuring 3, the darkest entry yet, according to director Michael Chaves. This darkness has always been present in the franchise, threatening to overpower both the Warren's and the victims they are trying to save.

At a press conference, Farmiga revealed that, to her, love wins out. The actress says that the relationship between the Warren's is what keeps her coming back to the franchise time and time again. Farmiga sees The Conjuring 3 as more of a love story than a horror story and that love doesn't just apply to the Warren's, but to the families that they help and the casework that they do. Ultimately, Farmiga sees the love aspect of the series as something that makes the horror more digestible.

What I find fascinating is they [the Warrens] are the personification of love... it's more of a love story than it is a horror story to me and that's what makes it so unique and successful. And that's why I enjoy coming back, I think that, that message of love - not only for the Warrens for each other, but for the work that they do and for the people that they help. Y'know, that selflessness, that compassion, that embodiment of love is really, really something holy and special that makes it digestible and beautiful.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 3

Ed and Lorraine Warren worked on cases together through the 90s before retiring and their love has always been central to the stories in the films. In fact, it's clear that their own family inspires them to help the families that were seen in the first two films and that looks to be no different in The Conjuring 3. Still, the upcoming sequel will put their love to the test like no entry has before.

Lorraine's powers in The Conjuring 3 seem to be getting stronger and with that comes heightened risk. As helpful as the powers are, they take a toll on Lorraine and previous films have shown just what kind of effect this has on her. This has led to some tension between her and Ed, mainly because he is so afraid of losing her to the demons that they are fighting. It's clear that The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will see their relationship put to the test once again and while they're both likely to survive, their love will be at risk like never before.
