First-look images at The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It reveal the Warrens' return and their darkest saga yet. The Conjuring cinematic universe kicked off with the original 2013 film starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The first film was released to critical acclaim and director James Wan followed it up with The Conjuring 2, another solid entry in the franchise that touched on both the Amityville case and the Enfield poltergeist. Ed and Lorraine Warren haven't always been the focus of the franchise, though.

The Conjuring has inspired several spinoffs, including the Annabelle series of films, of which there are three, and 2018's The Nun. 2019's The Curse of La Llorona also takes place within The Conjuring universe, but the upcoming third film will return to the franchise's roots and one of the most notorious cases the Warrens were ever involved in. The Devil Made Me Do It will follow the Warrens' involvement in the first-ever legal case where demonic possession was used as a defense.

The Conjuring has become one of the most successful horror franchises of the 21st century and with reports that this third entry in the main series will be its darkest yet, horror fans have one more thing to look forward to in 2021. The Conjuring 3 was recently rated R, teasing the darkness in store. With a trailer reportedly hitting the internet tomorrow ahead of the film's release on June 4, The Devil Made Me Do It is shaping up to be an early summer event.

As part of HBO Max's day-and-date 2021 line-up, The Conjuring 3 will be widely available upon its release and, thanks to its vast franchise potential, this shouldn't harm any potential sequels. There are plenty more of the Warrens' cases for future installments to adapt, but first, fans will have to see how the Arne Johnson saga will take its toll on the pair. Lorraine Warren is depicted as being physically connected to many of these supernatural events and each one wears her down. She could be in major trouble when The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It rolls around, but luckily it's more than likely she'll live to see another day, even if everyone else doesn't.
