Vera Farmiga’s Lorraine Warren character is attacked by a demon in a new clip from the third Conjuring film, The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. It’s been five years since audiences were last terrified by the paranormal investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The real-life couple has been played on screen by Patrick Wilson and Farmiga ever since filmmaker, James Wan, launched the series back in 2013.
Straight from the start, The Conjuring was able to surpass the sort of stale storytelling that modern paranormal horror films typically utilize. The fact that the Warrens were part of numerous real-life incidents held a certain degree of appeal for audiences, perhaps even serving to intensify the scares within the films. Whatever the secret to Wan’s franchise has been, however, there’s no denying that the two films that have been released so far have been hugely successful and managed to breathe new life into a genre that was in dire need of a boost. It’s particularly noteworthy that paranormal horror sequels are often churned out in quick succession, in order to maintain momentum that can quickly fade. The Conjuring, on the other hand, has slowly but surely added to its legacy, and audiences can’t get enough.
Now with The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It set to release on June 4th, fans are finally beginning to experience some of what the long-awaited film has to offer. A new clip has arrived from Warner Bros. India’s official YouTube channel, the likes of which shows off a very creepy scenario in which Lorraine undergoes a paranormal experience in a forest. After chasing a giggling young woman through the woods, Lorraine finds herself at a cliffside, where a horrific demon hand grabs her and attempts to drag her to her death. Check out the clip below:
The clip immediately stands out for one major reason: this is the first time that the Warrens are taking their investigative abilities beyond haunted dwellings. The Devil Made Me Do It eschews its past relationship to haunted houses by focusing on a story that marked the first time in American history that a murder suspect used demonic possession as a defense in court. Arne Johnson’s case is officially known as the Devil Made Me Do It case and was linked to the Warrens after they attended an exorcism in which Johnson had been present in 1981. The Conjuring 3 will have plenty of new ground to cover as a result of switching up the franchise’s formula, and this most recent clip seems to promise some tense scares.
Another change for the series is its direction. Wan has previously directed both Conjuring sequels, but this time, Michael Chaves has stepped in. The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It marks only the second feature film in Chaves’ career to date, with his 2019 effort, The Curse of La Llorona having received a rather lackluster reception upon its release. In this way, fans of The Conjuring may feel a little nervous. Wan is the reason the franchise is what it is today, and a horror filmmaker with little experience taking over the third film is a considerable gamble. But judging by what’s been seen in the trailer and this most recent clip, The Conjuring 3 feels like its predecessors, and that’s the best possible position to be in.
