The Confession Killer season 2 is something that viewers are wondering about considering how many serial killers there have been. Directed by Robert Kenner and Taki Oldham, The Confession Killer season 1 tells the story of Henry Lee Lucas, an alleged serial killer who confessed to more than 600 murders. The Confession Killer season 1 implies that Lucas aimed to please Texas Rangers by providing false information about cold cases.

Lucas spent the '60s in prison after being convicted of killing his mother. During the ‘70s, he presumably spent years drifting around America, and later confessed to killing two women during the early ‘80s: his young niece Becky Powell and 82-year-old Kate Rich. Lucas then confessed to committing hundreds of murders during interviews with Texas Rangers. The Confession Killer season 1 on Netflix documents how Lucas was able to remember so much detail about his alleged crimes, and why Texas authorities were so invested in the continuous revelations, even if the killer's claims didn't correlate with the evidence.

The Confession Killer season 1 reaches a definitive conclusion about Lucas’ claims, but there’s undoubtedly more territory to explore. Here’s what to expect for The Confession Killer season 2.

The Confession Killer Season 2 Renewal

Henry Lee Lucas in The Confession Killer

Unlike the Netflix series Making a Murderer, The Confession Killer season 1 doesn’t feature a subject that could potentially be released from prison, as Lucas passed away in 2001 at age 64. However, despite his now-debunked claims about murdering hundreds of women, it’s widely believed that he did indeed kill three women before shifting investigators away from killers that remained on the loose; a premise that could be the foundation for new episodes. At this point, Netflix hasn’t ordered The Confession Killer season 2, and a second installment probably won’t happen unless new revelations about Lucas emerge.

It's worth noting that Netflix hasn't teased The Confession Killer season 2. Since The Confession Killer season 1 appears to be a limited series, and fully covers Lucas’ story from the early ‘80s to his death, it seems unlikely that a second installment will happen. However, Netflix may choose to capitalize on true crime trends by telling a new story about a different individual. If that happens, The Confession Killer season 2 would require the appropriate amount of production prep time, and likely wouldn’t release in 2021.

The Confession Killer Season 2 Story Details

Henry Lee Lucas in The Confession Killer

The Confession Killer season 1 debunks Lucas' confessions, and also briefly details his friendship with serial killer Ottis Toole during the ‘70s. So, it’s possible that Netflix may focus on Toole’s backstory for The Confession Killer season 2, if it happens. In 1983, Toole confessed to killing six-year-old Adam Walsh - the son of John Walsh, who would later become the long-time host of America's Most Wanted. In 2008, Florida authorities announced that Toole most likely committed the Walsh murder.

In The Confession Killer season 1, journalist Hugh Aynesworth speaks about not only investigating Lucas, but also serial killer Ted Bundy - the subject of Netflix’s 2019 docuseries Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes. If The Confession Killer season 2 happens, it would theoretically build on concepts already explored by Netflix, most notably the links between serial killers and the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit that developed during the ’70 and ‘80s, as detailed in the Netflix series Mindhunter.
