A new video shows the barbaric gameplay of Conan Unconquered, an upcoming strategy game published by Funcom and developed by Dune 2 and Command & Conquer veterans Petroglyph. The fast-paced game will see players facing multiple waves of enemies, leading up to more and more difficult levels.

The character of Conan the Barbarian was initially created in novels by Robert E. Howard in 1932, although most are familiar with the version of the character from the 1982 movie that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. Since then, others have attempted to bring the character back to the big screen, but have failed. Fortunately, Conan has a better history in video games: there have been several interesting releases, including Age of Conan: Unchained and the survival game Conan Exiles, which released just last year. Funcom published both games, and Conan Unconquered continues the publisher's tradition by offering another take on the story of Conan.

Nowhere does that world appear so brutal and savage than in a new video released by Funcom that includes behind-the-scenes interviews with Conan Unconquered's developers. The video shows the quick pace of the game's Alpha stage of development, as well as demonstrates how barbaric the game's world is, which is, quite obviously, the point. The idea behind gameplay is to build strongholds that can resist these hordes, as well as create defenses that can unleash destruction upon them. The title also offers both a single-player and co-op mode.

Conan the Barbarian has recently become trendy in pop culture again, perhaps thanks to a new comic book series recently released by Marvel. However, he will also reportedly get a new live-action series on Amazon that will stick to the original stories from Howard's books. Although that might disappoint fans of the old Schwarzenegger movie, fans of the character as he was written will probably appreciate seeing a faithful retelling of the original story.

Conan is so hot right now that he even got a chance to join the Avengers in comics. Marvel debuted Avengers: No Road Home in 2019 with Conan entering the story after Scarlet Witch finds herself trapped in the Hyborean Age. Conan previously got to team up with DC's Wonder Woman in 2017. It appears Funcom is striking while the iron is hot with these Conan-inspired games and it's sure to please fans of the character.
