Seth Rogen gets Conan O’Brien to smoke week on Conan. O’Brien’s late-night tenure began in 1993 when he unexpectedly took over NBC’s Late Night from David Letterman. 16 years later, he was promoted to be Jay Leno’s successor as host of The Tonight Show; however, Leno infamously usurped O’Brien only a few months later.

After his NBC departure, O’Brien left network television behind and took his talents to cable, launching TBS’ Conan in 2010. In 2019, Conan underwent a major format change, switching from a traditional hour-long show to a half-hour focused on a single interview. Now, O’Brien is leaving Conan behind and trading his daily show for a weekly variety series on HBO Max as part of a new deal with WarnerMedia—a move that will see him no longer front a late-night talk show for the first time in 30 years. O’Brien is celebrating the last week of his TBS run with appearances from some of his all-time most popular guests like Bill Hader, Paul Rudd, and Jack Black.

Rogen returned Tuesday night for one more appearance. During Rogen’s interview, O’Brien asked the actor what he should do during his downtime between shows, prompting Rogen to whip out a joint. When O’Brien proceeded to actually light it, Rogen warned, “Don’t smoke that now. Or do, this will be a great, weird show for all of us.” While fumbling with Rogen’s lighter and joint, O’Brien admitted he didn’t know what he was doing and joked, “This is the kind of thing you do when you know it’s over for you.” Rogen and Andy Richter then joined O’Brien in taking a hit. Even though the bit felt a tad pre-arranged, Rogen claimed he “wasn’t expecting any of this.” That said, when O’Brien departed The Tonight Show in 2010, he spent his final week on the air doing essentially whatever he wanted, and he seems to be taking the same approach with his last week on TBS. However, the circumstances of O'Brien's departure this time feel like a victory lap, making it appropriate to feature fun guest-stars like Rogen.

On Conan's Monday night’s show, Rudd interrupted Hader’s interview to squeeze in his long-running Mac and Me joke—which many surely believed would be a highlight of the week. Rogen’s guest appearance on Conan and yet another viral moment proved to be the perfect follow-up and perhaps exemplify the difference between O’Brien’s network and cable runs. Now that he’s smoked weed with Rogen on-air, there's no denying O’Brien is one of the all-time great talk show hosts. Conan first premiered in November of 2010 and will air its last episode on June 24, 2021.
