First 'Conan the Barbarian' Trailer Is A True Tease

conan the barbarian remake trailer Jason Momoa

Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake director Marcus Nispel will be at the helm of another gory franchise reboot this summer, with the highly-anticipated Conan the Barbarian. The film stars Jason Momoa as the titular, muscle-bound warrior, following in the footsteps of The Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

An official trailer for the Conan reboot has been unveiled, but be warned, it's a true teaser that offers only brief glimpses of actual film footage - and a few choice words by Momoa's vicious Barbarian.

Here's the lowdown on Conan the Barbarian, in terms of plot:

To avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his Cimmerian village, Conan goes on a quest to find and kill the sadistic warlord responsible. However, this warlord, Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang), is on his own quest to find an elusive young woman, Tamara (Rachel Nichols), the key to an enigmatic ritual of resurrection. When Conan abducts Tamara and uses her as bait, he is pursued by armies, besieged by monsters and led to a site of primeval magic and human sacrifice.

The production design of Nispel's Conan reboot looks effectively savage so far, and what little is shown in the teaser trailer does harken to the brutal style and atmosphere of the original comics. An impressive Conan the Barbarian motion poster that paid homage to the work of acclaimed illustrator Frank Frazetta was unveiled recently, which further suggests that this new film is indeed modeled primarily on the graphic novel incarnation of the character.

Nispel doesn't exactly have a great track record as a director (bloody, yes, but not solid overall), and it's difficult to go on too much about the new Conan movie without seeing more footage of Momoa and company in action. What little has been shown at this point should be enough to keep fans interested - though readers should feel free to contest (or echo) that sentiment in the comments section below.

Conan the Barbarian attacks theaters this summer on August 19th.
