There will be blood in the prehistoric land of Hyboria and on the lunar surface of the Moon in two of this year’s most highly-anticipated releases, the latest “found footage” scarefest, Apollo 18, and the franchise reboot, Conan the Barbarian.
An international poster for the secret Apollo mission flick has made its way online for viewing, along with a motion poster that features Jason Momoa looking all broody and ready for action in Conan.
Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, the Night Watch trilogy) is the big name producer on Apollo 18, a new sci-fi/horror mockumentary that purports to reveal footage of two astronauts’ secret mission to the moon back in 1973. An official trailer for the film was released last month, and although it revealed too much about the plot for most everyone’s tastes, the footage on display had an appropriately dated look to it – though we hope it refrained from revealing every one of Apollo 18‘s secrets.
Although Apollo 18 was originally scheduled for release tomorrow (March 4th), it’s now set to hit theaters towards the end of April. That’s honestly for the best, seeing as another horrific tale involving aliens, Battle: Los Angeles, arrives next Friday. Both these films are similar enough that they might’ve ended up hurting one another’s box office prospects, had they been released in such close proximity. Here’s hoping moviegoers don’t tire of seeing evil extraterrestrial thrillers, given there are even more on the horizon (as indicated by our own original “Year of the Alien” mashup video).

Conan the Barbarian
Arnold Schwarzenegger famously depicted the muscle-bound warrior Conan for the first time onscreen back in 1982 in the bloody, R-Rated adventure flick, Conan the Barbarian. Since then, the character’s never been quite the same battle-happy, head-slicing brute. He was watered down in the PG-Rated sequel, Conan the Destroyer, and even became the star of his own Saturday morning cartoon show, Conan the Adventurer, back in the early ’90s.

Jason Momoa will follow in Schwarzenegger’s footsteps and portray Conan in this year’s franchise reboot, alongside fellow roughneck stars like Stephen Lang (Avatar) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy). The new Conan the Barbarian probably won’t be quite as hyper-stylized as 300 or graphic like Starz’ Spartacus: Blood and Sand, but it should be a bloody, chest-thumping affair in the same vein.
Lionsgate has revealed a new motion poster for the Conan reboot that deliberately pays homage to the artistry of the late Frank Frazetta, whose oil paintings are still considered to be the definitive portrayal of the character. Just check out this example of Frazetta’s work and then note the similarities to the motion poster, which can be viewed by clicking the link below.
Apollo 18 makes its way into U.S. theaters on April 22nd, 2011.
Conan the Barbarian arrives later this year on August 19th.
