We lost an amazing show when Community finally went off the air in 2015. The sitcom had given fans six hilarious seasons full of ups and downs, witty banter, and characters that we grew to love and root for. The show followed a group of friends- played by Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Chevy Chase, and Jim Rash - as their navigated their time at community college.

Many fans consider the first three seasons to the primetime for this show. After the third season, however, creator Dan Harmon was abruptly fired and replaced with writers David Guarascio and Moses Port. Many fans feel that the writing and humor changed come the fourth season, which may explain why the show’s ratings began to fall. With the onset of each new season, it became more up-in-the-air whether the show would be canceled or not. Harmon was eventually brought back for the fifth season, though the show was then canceled by NBC. However, Yahoo! eventually picked it up for its sixth and final season, which sadly came to an end in 2015.

However, that may not be the end of Community. Since as early as the second season, the show’s creators have been hinting at their desire to release a movie after the conclusion of six seasons. Now that many of the show’s actors have said they’d be more than willing, it seems like a new season or even a movie could be in the future. Here’s everything fans need to know about the likelihood that Community could be coming to our screens again (maybe even the silver screen, this time!).

It’ll Likely Be A Movie, Not A New Season

Hardcore fans of Community know that the show has always been pushing for six seasons and a movie, which began gaining traction in the show’s second season during the episode “Paradigms of Human Memory.”

In the episode, there’s a flashback where Abed is dressed up as the main character from the short-lived drama The Cape. When he accidentally knocks Jeff’s lunch tray over with his cape, Jeff yells, “That show’s gonna last three weeks.” Abed then responded, “Six seasons and a movie!” - thus bringing life to the hashtag that took over Twitter.

Each season it became more unlikely the show would be renewed, yet it survived until its sixth season as they wanted. So now, we’re closer than ever to fulfilling the #sixseasonsandamovie prophecy. Maybe if we get the tweet trending again on Twitter it’ll help?

The Cast Has Already Said They’re In

While there’s been no official word if a Community movie or another season is in the works, many of the former cast members have made it known they’re more than ready to reprise their characters.

Danny Pudi, who played Abed Nadir in the show, admitted this month that the former cast has a group chat where they’ve expressed their interest to one another. "We have a little text chain, so we're always like, 'We're ready! We're ready!'" he said at the TV Guide at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "But who knows? I think everyone's excited for it, it's just a matter of it hopefully coming together, and I'll be there."

Creator Dan Harmon Is Trying To Make It Happen

Dan Harmon is the brilliant creator behind Community and it sounds like he’s just as determined to see the show have another season or even a movie as the rest of us. In November 2017, he revealed that he’s been in talks with others in the entertainment industry to get the plan in motion.

“I keep having conversations with the kinds of people that could make it happen,” he told TheWrap. “The Russo brothers moved from Community to becoming industry shapers. So did one of our most popular directors, Justin Lin, who directed the first paintball episode.”

“I hope I’m not talking out of school by saying that,” Harmon continued. “I’ll get together with him every once in a while, or we’ll have dinner, and we’re talking — we keep trying to figure out how to do this.”

Producer Chris McKenna Says The Script Is Written

Chris McKenna, who was an Executive Producer on Community, made fans go wild last year when he revealed that the script for the movie may actually be written. A few months ago, McKenna took to Twitter to try and discuss another one of his projects Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, fans were more interested in hearing about a potential Community reboot.

“Chris, can you and @danharmon just sit down and write the Community movie please,” one fan with the handle @toni_denkovski wrote to McKenna, to which the producer wasted no time in replying. “It’s written. Looking for an Executive Movie-iser,” McKenna wrote back, implying that all they need to do now is find a studio to take the project on.

It sounds like we’re closer than ever to making the movie a reality!

Will Donald Glover Return?

If Community gets another season or even a movie, a big question is whether Donald Glover will reprise his role as athlete-turned-nerd Troy Barnes.

Fans know that the celeb was a full-time cast member until the fifth season, in which he only appeared in 5 out of the 13 episodes. Many speculated his reason for leaving was to pursue his rap career as his alter ego Childish Gambino. However, Glover revealed via social media that his reasons run deeper, explaining he wanted to focus on projects in which he has more freedom.

So far, the actor has remained silent on whether he’d reprise his role. However, considering Glover didn’t make a cameo during the series finale of Community, many fans feel it’s unlikely he’ll return. But given that he’s dabbled in acting in recent years (and that Troy was such a fan-favourite), maybe he’d be willing to do it one last time. Fingers crossed!

Joel McHale Says They Can’t Do It Without Troy

Fans would be devastated if Donald Glover was one of the only actors not to return to Community if another season or a movie does happen- and so would his old co-stars. Joel McHale recently said that he doesn’t know if they could make a movie if they’re missing Troy Barnes. It wouldn’t really be the Greendale Seven then, would it?

"I don't think [creator Dan Harmon has ] written it. He's got his hands full writing Rick and Morty,” McHale told IndieWire last year. "And getting Donald [Glover] would be very hard at this point unless we had $10 million lying around for him to appear. Donald, $10 million good for one day? We kind of need him.”

He added, "It would be great to do, I'd do it in a New York minute."

Money Might Be The Issue

Despite expressing interest in reprising his character Jeff Winger along with the rest of the Community cast, Joel McHale still doesn’t sound optimistic if another season or a movie will ever happen. Rather, he thinks it’ll only get picked up if it has the potential to make money, which he sounds unsure about.

“No, I think there's a world where it happens. But Dan (Harmon, who created Community) just got picked up for 70 episodes of Rick and Morty, so he's going to be busy for a long time,” he told USA Today. “And everyone else has stuff going on. If a script got written and there was actual money to make it, then it could go."

They’re Waiting Until The Cast Is Less Famous

One of the issues with getting the movie into motion is ensuring that all of the actors are free to reprise their roles. Many of them are involved in new projects and commitments that they can’t just say leave, which makes it difficult to coordinate.  That’s why creator Dan Harmon says he’s happy to wait until the cast is less famous than they are now.

"If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a Community movie just for my own heart and mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people will show up to make it,” he explained. "On the other hand, if I wait for everyone to line up and say, we’re all out of work and ready to do a Community movie, well, I guess that's a bad idea, too."

Don’t Expect Chevy Chase To Be Involved

Chevy Chase was a regular on Community up until the fourth season when he retired his character, Pierce Hawthorne. Well, more specifically, his elderly character was written to have passed away, which leaves little room for the actor to ever come back to make a cameo.

When Chase left the show in 2012, there were many rumours surrounding his decision. Many reports suggested there was bad blood between him and creator Dan Harmon as well as some of his co-stars. Months before leaving the show, Chase told Huffington Post, “[Being on the show is like] being relegated to hell and watching ‘Howdy Doody’ for the rest of your life. I can’t stand sitcoms,” He added, “I probably won’t be around that much longer, frankly.”

Now, Community was wild enough that we could see a plotline about a character pretending to have framed their death just to have an excuse to bring them back on. Also, Chase even quickly appeared in the first episode of season 5, at Harmon's request. So, even if it's unlikely, there's still a chance...

The Cast Doesn’t Know What Their Characters Are Up To

Fans are anxious to know what became of the gang after leaving community college. And while we’ve all theorized about what our favourite characters are up to, the actors who portrayed them on TV try to avoid thinking about the future of their characters, as they’d rather leave that up to the show’s creative writing!

"I think the one thing I've always been consistent about is... I'll never predict where the show is going to go,” Danny Pudi (Abed Nadir) shared this month. "It was always more exciting to just discover as I read a script and be like, 'Okay, I guess this week I'm going to have to figure out a Batman impression. This week I'm going to have to watch My Dinner with Andre a thousand times. That's kind of the exciting part of the show — the spontaneity. So I'll leave that to Dan to come up with something really cool."
