NBC's Community, created by Dan Harmon, has been called one of the smartest TV shows ever written, thanks to its hilarious writing, genius jokes, and its meta film parodies. The show is available for streaming on Netflix and Hulu.

The show features many recurring characters that are part of Greendale Community College, some of them being well-loved, and some of them hated. So, here are 5 Community recurring characters fans loved, and 5 fans didn't care for.

Loved - Magnitude

Magnitude raising his arms in celebration

While Magnitude - short for Magnetic Attitude - was never a man of many words (except his famous catchphrase, "Pop-Pop!"), he has been a beloved character since his introduction in "Early 21st Century Romanticism", when he crashed Jeff's party.

Simply put, it's almost impossible not to crack a smile when Magnitude (played by Luke Youngblood) is on screen. His charm and enthusiasm are quite infectious, and he's truly an amazing character.

Hated - Buzz Hickey

Community Buzz Hickey Jonathan Banks

After Chevy Chase left Community, it seemed the writers started to miss having an old, unlikable character too much. Season 5 introduced Professor Buzz Hickey, a criminology teacher who was a little too dull for fans' liking.

It seemed like he was just there to fill a hole left by Pierce, and while Jonathan Banks's Hickey had his moments, his quick introduction and just as quick departure didn't sit right with fans.

Loved - Leonard Rodriguez

Richard Erdman as Leonard in Community

Leonard is another beloved recurring character, appearing since season 1. Portrayed by Richard Erdman, Leonard was the butt of many jokes, most famously the "Shut Up Leonard" running gag.

Another hilarious gag involving Leonard was where he reviews various foods such as frozen pizza and the fictional Let's Potato Chips, calling them both "a buy".

Hated - Professor Michelle Slater

Jeff and Professor Slater in the study room in Community

Perhaps one of the most disliked characters in season 1, Michelle Slater was the Statistics Professor at Greendale who has a rule against dating students, but starts a relationship with Jeff. Fans didn't like her, for the simple fact that she was a little pretentious and was just a barrier between Jeff and Britta.

She mysteriously left after season 1 and was hardly mentioned again, except for a visual gag during "Intro To Political Science" when a TV screen read "Professor Slater Still Missing".

Loved - Alex "Star-Burns" Osbourne

Troy, Abed, and Star Burns in Community

Another recurring character since season 1, Star-Burns, or as he liked to be called, Alex, was a fellow community college student and drug dealer. He was announced dead in season 3 when his car/meth lab exploded, but he had faked his death and returns in season 5.

The character was extremely wacky and hilarious. He prioritized his drug-dealing career most of the time, like when he dropped out of politics to focus on drug-dealing, or when he asked Biology professor Kane if they should have a Breaking Bad thing going on.

Hated - Vaughn Miller

Shirley looking at a shirtless Vaughn

Yet another season 1 character, Vaughn was hated for a simple reason - the writers wanted him to be hated. He was a hippie vegan who played hacky sack,  never wore a shirt or shoes, and made up terrible songs insulting people, such as Pierce and Britta ("Pierce You're A B" and "Getting Rid of Britta").

Halfway through the season he starts dating Annie, and they almost move away to Denver, but Annie decides to stay. Vaughn is never heard of after Season 1.

Loved - Garrett Lambert

Garrett in a mocap suit

Perhaps one of the weirdest characters on the show (and that's saying something) is Garrett Lambert, rightly called "if God spilled a person". Garrett has a screechy, anxious way of talking and is often the subject of many rallies to "save" him.

Garrett is one of the most entertaining minor characters, due to his funny and fast way of speaking and his weird personality. In the season 6 episode, "Wedding Videography", he marries his classmate Stacy, who turns out to be his cousin (classic Garrett!).

Hated - Rich Stephenson

First appearing in the season 1 episode, "Beginner Pottery", Rich was a fellow pottery student with Jeff, Abed, and Annie. While everybody fawned over Rich, Jeff knew the truth - Rich was just a phony, pretending to be an amateur so he could impress everyone.

Jeff, and many fans, grew to truly dislike the character. The problem wasn't that he wasn't nice or likable, it's that he was too nice, and ultimately it all ended up looking extremely phony and sometimes even annoying.

Loved - Officer Cackowski

Another underrated, hilarious character, Officer Cackowski is a police officer who often shows up when the study group's exploits start getting carried away, like when Annie fakes a crime and reports it to the police and Cackowski shows up.

He had some extremely funny moments, such as his Cop Opera (COPERA!) idea..

Hated - Todd Jacobson

Another character specifically written to be annoying, fans couldn't help disliking the weird Todd Jacobson but also feeling sorry for him a little. He was a war veteran with a newborn kid, who gets entangled with the study group.

He wasn't the funniest or the most interesting character, and while he had his moments, his lack of flair and often unfunny lines didn't make him a big deal with fans.
