'Community' Season 2 Finale Preview: More Paintball & 'Lost's' Josh Holloway

Community Paintball Sequel Starring Lost's Josh Holloway

While Community sort of started out as a satire of college-based TV shows and movies, it has since become more of a “movie satire of the week” type show. Since late last year, the Community gang has satirized everything from zombies to gangsters to their biggest hit – action movies – with the paintball-related episode “Modern Warfare.”

This Thursday's season finale, “A Fist Full of Paintballs,” is a sequel of sorts to that incredibly popular paintball-themed episode, with a heavy emphasis on westerns as opposed to action movies, and a guest star in the form of Lost's Josh Holloway.

“Modern Warfare” was a television masterpiece directed by Fast Five director Justin Lin. It referenced everything from Die Hard to Predator to Terminator to Escape from New York to John Woo’s The Killer and Hard-Boiled to The Warriors and The Matrix. “A Fist Full of Paintballs,” not unlike “Warfare,” will almost certainly reference every western movie ever, but especially all the Sergio Leone-directed ones. As for why Josh Holloway is making an appearance or what role he'll be playing – your guess is as good as mine?

Though Community is still one of my favorite TV shows – and it’s probably the show I most look forward to on Thursdays – it's no longer as consistently entertaining, in my opinion, as it was last season. As great as the “movie satire of the week” format can be, the show has lost a bit of its luster due to over-saturation.

Indeed, I loved “Modern Warfare” and the zombie episode as much as the next guy, but part of what made those episodes so awesome and interesting was that they were unique. Now that practically every episode is a parody of a movie or a genre of movie, I’m starting to miss the more sitcom-esque, world-building episodes. Community would do itself a massive favor by making its parodies more sporadic. Which isn’t to say that they’re bad – far from it. They’re just better in small doses.

Community Modern Warfare Sequel Senor Chang

Hopefully, we'll get some sort of conclusion (or at least elaboration) on the Jeff/Annie kiss from last season's finale. I know, I know -- I'm a sucker for unexpected romance, what can I say.

Community, starring Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Chevy Chase, Ken Jeong, amongst others, airs Thursday nights @ 8pm on NBC.
