Troy actor Donald Glover provides a new update on the Community movie and confirms his involvement in the long-awaited project. Created by Dan Harmon, Community first aired on NBC in 2009, running for 6 seasons (the last of which aired on the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen streaming service) before coming to an end in 2015. After several years of false starts, the promised movie is now confirmed to be moving forward with most of the principal cast members returning.

In a recent interview with GQ in which he breaks down his most iconic characters, Glover confirms that he will be returning as Troy for the Community movie. The actor also provides a brief update on the film, which is expected to start filming in the next few months. Check out Glover's full comment below:

“The Community movie, there’s some progress on it. We’re supposed to be shooting it soon. Haven’t seen a script. In true Dan [Harmon] fashion, will probably get it on the first day. But yeah, it’s supposed to be happening. I know just as much about it as you do.”

Why Troy Needs To Be In The Community Movie

Abed and Troy on Community

Glover left Community during season 5, meaning the show was down two central characters following Chevy Chase's unceremonious exit at the end of season 4. During season 6, Yvette Nicole Brown also left the show, taking time off to take care for her sick father. While Community season 6 did serve as a fitting conclusion to the show, being down so many key cast members did mean it didn't quite feel the same as when the show was in its heyday during earlier seasons.

If the Community movie wants to recapture some of the show's earlier magic, an appearance from Glover is basically a necessity. His dynamic with Abed (Danny Pudi) was always a high point of the show, and he also just brought a unique comedic and dramatic talent to the proceedings. Since Glover is returning and Chase is extremely unlikely to appear, Brown is now the only core cast member who's not yet confirmed to reprise her role.

The upcoming Community movie will probably serve as the last time that all of these characters share the screen together. While Joel McHale's Jeff Winger is the central figure in most episodes, it's really an ensemble show that thrives best when all the original characters are interacting. Many questions remain about the Community movie, but it's now at least clear that Troy Barnes will play some role in the story.
