During a recent interview, Joel McHale stated a Community movie could happen soon. It has been nearly five years since the final episode of Community aired, wrapping up six seasons of beautifully written television. The show introduced viewers to the diverse and quirky members of "The Study Group," and followed them on wacky adventures like paintball assassin, school-wide 'floor is lava' games, Dungeons & Dragons, and campus-wide blanket forts.

Despite the time that has elapsed since, Community has still maintained an enthusiastic fanbase that lives on through memes, rewatch sessions, subreddits, and even the occasional "six seasons and a movie" rally call. It's also well-known that the cast members (perhaps with the exception of Chevy Chase) loved their time on the show and still communicate via group chat. Fans just don't seem ready yet to say goodbye to Community and the beloved students and faculty of Greendale Community College.

Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger on Community, recently spoke with Variety about hosting the newly released, special episode of Tiger King. During the interview, McHale also opened up about Community. McHale stated he is now more optimistic than ever about the latter half of "six seasons and a movie" becoming a reality. Community started streaming on Netflix a few weeks ago on April 1, bringing new attention to the comedy series.

The cast of the Community including Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Danny Pudi, Chevy Chase, Joel McHale, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Gillian Jacobs

According to McHale, "There's way more rumblings than there used to be." He continued, "Alison [Brie] tweeted that she got a phone call from Sony. They still haven't called me, maybe Matthew Lillard will take over. But I would say there's a better chance than there’s ever been -- For a long time I was like, 'never gonna happen.' And now I think with the renewed interest, and I know the cast is interested, that it could happen."

Created by Dan Harmon, Community starred McHale, Brie, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Gillian Jacobs, and Chevy Chase as the core group. They were also joined by Jim Rash, John Oliver, and Ken Jeong. Since Community ended, the stars have moved on to find success in different shows, platforms, and mediums. Notably, Donald Glover went on to build a successful career as a musician, as well as to create and star in FX's Atlanta.

It'll be interesting to see what new developments follow. While it may be difficult to coordinate getting all the stars together, most of the former cast members have expressed an interest in returning to Greendale. While the tides have always seemed to move against Community throughout its six season run, the show managed to find ways to survive the challenges hurled at it. Community stood out from other shows due to the strong writing, countless homages to television and film, and meta narratives. However, what kept fans returning to Greendale was the lovable group of misfits at the core of its character-driven stories. If the cast and creators are eager to return, it does seem like #SixSeasonsAndAMovie may actually become a reality.
