10 Off-site Events at San Diego Comic-Con 2015

San Diego Convention Center

San Diego Comic-Con 2015 is upon us, with a mass of exciting panels, booths, announcements and events awaiting attendees behind the doors of the San Diego Convention Center. Tickets for the convention sold out within less than an hour of going on sale, however, which means that there were many comic book, movie and TV fans who weren't lucky enough to miss out on getting a badge.

Screen Rant will be bringing you all the latest news and insights from inside Comic-Con over the next week, but this massive event isn't just confined to the convention center. Comic-Con is once again set to take over the streets of downtown San Diego, and there will be plenty of ways for non-badge holders to join in the fun.

Locations for off-site events range include the Petco Park Interactive Zone, where visitors can free fall to their doom on the Scream Queens ride and pet beagle puppies in Snoopy's doghouse in honor of The Peanuts Movie, and San Diego Central Library, where a number of comic book events are set to coincide with the convention.

Read on to find out some of the different things you can do at Comic-Con... without actually being at Comic-Con.

Assassin's Creed Experience

Assassins Creed Syndicate artwork

Where: Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade

When: 10AM-5PM, Thursday 9th-Sunday 12th July

To tease the upcoming release of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft has set up an elaborate obstacle course in which people can test out their mettle as potential Assassins. Challenges include a running wall, a 25 foot 'Leap of Faith', a pendulum swing and an overhead glide. Whiskered gentlemen can also get a free shave next door to the obstacle course at Schick Hydro Underground. Let's just hope the Assassin's Creed shave isn't too much like the Sweeney Todd shave.

The Art of Comic-Con

Art of Comic Con exhibition Jim Lee

Where: San Diego Central Library

When: June 20th-August 30th

An exhibition of art pieces created exclusively for Comic-Con over the past 45 years, from over 60 different artists. Some of the pieces on show will demonstrate the process of creating comic book art, from pencils to the finished product, and artists included in the exhibition include legends like Jim Lee. The exhibition is free and runs for several weeks either side of Comic-Con.

The Walking Dead Escape

The Walking Dead comic con

Where: Petco Park Interactive Zone

When: Friday 10th-Saturday 11th July, 6-10PM

Become a member of the horrifying, lurching undead or get your running shoes on and act out the role of a survivor attempting to flee them in this race/obstacle course/role-playing game set in and around the Alexandria Safe Zone. Join the Escape as a Walker for a zombie makeover and a chance to hang around the course trying to catch passing meals, or join as a survivor to find out how long you'd live in a zombie apocalypse. Combo tickets are available for those want to experience the zombie apocalypse from both perspectives. Ticket prices range from $40-$100.

Scream Queens Mega Scream Drop

Scream Queens Comic Con ride

Where: Petco Park Interactive Zone

When: Thursday 9th-Sunday 12th July, 10AM-6PM

To promote Scream Queens, the upcoming horror comedy from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, Fox has set up a free fall ride that drops riders 120 feet while recording their terrified/nauseous expressions for posterity and social media sharing. The ride operators will be dressed up as the Kappa House Sorority sisters and their luckless boyfriends, and there will also be Scream Queens swag on offer. To find out whether the ride is scarier than the show, check out Scream Queens when it premieres on Fox this fall.

Gotham 3D Photo Opportunity

Gotham Penguin Comic Con

Where: Petco Park Interactive Zone

When: Thursday 9th-Sunday 12th July, 10AM-8PM

Stop for a 3D photo with some of Gotham's villains, including The Penguin, The Riddler, Selina Kyle and Mr. Freeze, and check out a 12' tall Gotham themed statue called 'The Gates of Hell'. For more Gotham fun, keep an eye out for lookalikes dressed up as Penguin, who will be hanging around downtown San Diego on Friday and Saturday, handing out free pairs of Oswald's signature sunglasses. Fox has also teased that Gotham's actors could show up in person for these events, so look closely at those Penguins.

Zelda Symphony

Legend of Zelda symphony

Where: Copley Symphony Hall

When: Saturday 11th July, 7PM

Fans of the Legend of Zelda video game series should bring a pack of tissues to hear Symphony of the Goddesses play the classics from titles like Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. The concert's new arrangements carry the seal of approval from composer and sound director Koji Kondo and franchise producer Eiji Aonuma. Ticket prices range from $35-$100 depending on seats.

Snoopy's Doghouse and Beagle Puppies

Peanuts movie Comic Con

Where: Petco Park Interactive Zone

When: Thursday 9th-Sunday 12th July, 10AM-6PM

This is not a drill: there's going to be a petting zoo with beagle puppies at Snoopy's giant doghouse, as well as The Peanuts Movie swag and an inflatable slide. This might not be the most exciting upcoming release for Comic-Con attendees, but as far as promotional events go it's hard to beat puppies.

Hard Rock Cafe Comic Book Drive

Where: Hard Rock Cafe, 4th Avenue

When: Monday 6th-Sunday 12th July, 11AM-10PM

Calling on superheroes to help real life heroes, Hard Rock Cafe is hosting a comic book drive to collect reading materials for members of the United States Marine Corps serving overseas. Giving away stuff instead of getting free stuff might not sound like the most fun event, but it's for a good cause and is also a good opportunity to create shelf space for new comic books. The first 400 people to donate will receive a True Hero VIP lanyard that gives 20% off retail, food and non-alcoholic drink purchases at Hard Rock Cafe.

Ghostbusters Mass Hysteria Fan Party

Ghostbusters 1984 in uniform

All ages can attend until 9PM, after which it will be limited to over-21s only. This party is expected to get pretty busy and is on a first come, first served basis, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Her Universe Geek Couture Fashion Show

Her Universe Geek Couture

Where: Manchester Grand Hyatt

When: Thursday 9th July, 6-9PM

Her Universe's "Geek Couture" fashion show returns for a second year, following a competition to find the 25 best creators of geek-oriented fashion to show off their designs on the runway. This show is specifically for geek-inspired fashion clothing, rather than simply direct copies of costumes, and last years entries included dresses inspired by My Neighbor Totoro, the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead's Daryl Dixon. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis, and free for those holding an SDCC badge.
