Comic-Con 2010: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Panel

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World panel at Comic-Con 2010

An epic of epic epicness.

That is the tagline to one of this summer's most anticipated and fun-filled movies. Directed by fan-favorite Edgar Wright and based off of the books by Bryan Lee O'Malley, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a comic book movie that takes full advantage of its genre.

Check out our live coverage of the Scott Pilgrim panel as it happens!

Edgar Wright moderates the panel, poking fun at difficulty of following up Sylvester Stallone and his panel for The Expendables.

To introduced the cast - and there were a lot of cast members that came out on stage - he planned to ask questions for which they can only respond in one word answers.

First up, much to the happiness of Scott Pilgrim fans everywhere, was Bryan Lee O'Malley. O'Malley is the creator of the Scott Pilgrim books and they made sure to point out that the collection is currently #5 on the Amazon best seller list (not the graphic novel section, but of all books).

Pow! Special Scott Pilgrim Announcement #1

Then, Edgar Wright made the first of three special announcements for the panel. He explained that there are a lot of expectations of him to make certain announcements - likely referring to the buzz about The Avengers and Ant-Man announcements this weekend - so he wanted to make a special announcement here:

"On August 13th, Scott Pilgrim will be be released in 2D... for regular ticket prices"

Sadly, this is a special announcement and the hyped up crowd cheered accordingly.

On to the cast; Each of the 13 panelists were introduced in pairs or threes with their own featurette video, showing their highlight scenes from the film, and each was asked a pretty funny question they could only respond with one word.

Cast members introduced included: Mark Webber,  Alison Pill, Satya Bhabha, Ellen Wong, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Bam! Special Scott Pilgrim Announcement #2

After a bunch of intro videos to our favorite characters, Edgar Wright made his second special announcement, by introducing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and stating they were appearing in the film. They came out on stage to a standing ovation and Wright quickly followed by correcting himself and apologizing for the mix-up- what he meant to say is that they "were not" appearing in the movie and the pair put their heads down in sadness and muddled off the stage. Lots of laughter all around.

Wright explained Chris Evans couldn't be here because he's shooting Captain America and then followed up by saying that they do have Michael Cera who was also a final candidate for the role of Captain America, explaining that and that he made it down to the final five.... hundred. Michael Cera then came out on stage with a Captain America outfit and the happiness level of the thousands of attendees jumped up again.

We were then Shown a clip of Michael Cera's character, Scott Pilgrim, kicking ass and taking names with his sword, before moving on to audience Q&A.

  • One of the early questions from an audience member was directed at Michael Cera: "Are you afraid of being typecast for your future films."
  • His response to the question we've all pondered: "so much, yeah" followed with a straight-face and crowd laughter.
  • Other questions were mostly humorous, touching on whether it was hard to play a Canadian (several of the cast, including Cera are Canadian) and the film is based and shot in Toronto.
  • They also touched on fight training which was actually a large part of the production process.
  • Kieran Culkin had a scene where he had to kiss another guy and to break the ice, Edgar Wright kissed him on the lips.
  • Edgar: "Do you think Sylvester Stallone kissed any of The Expendables?"

Kapow! Special Scott Pilgrim Announcement #3

We didn't see too much footage that was entirely new but towards the end of the panel, everyone in the crowd was handed a cool Scott Pilgrim pins and Wright said we could watch another clip... or we could watch the entire movie. [Crowd eruption]

If you had received a pin with the 1up logo on it, you could go straight from Hall H, with the cast and trek down to the Balboa theater for the super secret Comic-Con screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. If you were not a lucky winner, not to worry, Wright explained that you can see the film for free on Saturday and Sunday at 6:30pm at the same theater. Awesome.

I won't get into details about the movie until we put up our official review but I will saw that if you are looking forward to the movie and/or know anything about the books, you will love it.

Well done, Edgar Wright.
