Whenever cinema fans hear the words “Luc Besson” and “assassins” in the same sentence, they tend to a little giddy. Ever since Léon: The Professional made the French filmmaker an icon on American shores (and a bonafide star out of Natalie Portman), any project featuring gun-toting badasses that has Besson’s name attached has become an immediate film of interest.
Adding to likes of La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element, The Transporter series, Taken and a handful of Jet Li films comes Colombiana, a new assassin flick starring Avatar‘s Zoe Saldana, who continues to carve out a career for herself playing goregous femmes who kick serious ass.
Check out the synopsis for this latest version of the Luc Besson assassin tale:
Spanning Latin America and the United States, the film follows a young woman who, after witnessing her parents’ murder as a child in Bogota, grows up to be a stone-cold assassin (Saldana). She works for her uncle as a hitman by day, but her personal time is spent engaging in vigilante murders that she hopes will lead her to her ultimate target: the mobster responsible for her parents’ death.
Sounds like a flick we’ve seen before, no doubt – the only difference is, I would pick Zoe Saldana over Bridget Fonda, Natalie Portman or even Milla Jovovich, any day of the week. But that’s just me. :-)
I leave it to you to decide who your Luc Besson lady assassin of choice is – but only AFTER you view the Colombiana trailer below, courtesy of Yahoo Movies:
The film has a cast of foreign actors whose faces you might recognize (if not their names), including Callum Blue (General Zod from Smallville), Cliff Curtis (Fire Lord from The Last Airbender), Michael Vartan from Alias, and Lennie James from Jericho and The Walking Dead, to name a few. A very solid cast, to say the least. The director, Oliver Megaton, has a several French TV/Film projects on his resume, with The Transporter 3 being the one film most American moviegoers will be familiar with. Take that how you will.
While Colombiana doesn’t seem all that original at first glance, Saldana has proven that she is a badass leading lady (see: Avatar and The Losers), and, of course, she’s not exactly detrimental to the eye, either. Let’s just say I’m sure that there will be an audience for this film.
SIDE NOTE: This film also marks the first film credit for our very own ‘man of the industry,’ Mike Eisenberg!
Colombiana will be in U.S. theaters on September 2, 2011.
